Looks like he picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue
KHAN es macho!!
Trillian raised something that I’d like to ask you all…In regards to your early reading levels, did you, as I did, find that you read well above your expected levels in elementary school? I was just wondering if our ‘geek’ status had a direct correlation to our reading experiences as young adults…I recall getting a special pass in second grade to access fifth-grade plus material, and how I was able to read a lot of things that my peers just were not into…UFO stuff, etc. etc…
Iw as definitely put in the advanced reading classes when I was in grade school.
Ah the bell curve cometh!
I had horrible reading scores. It plagued me all during elementary school. I didn’t read as a child, though. Definitely had something to do with that.
Funny story. The night before my placement exam for college I went out drinking. I showed up for the exam ripped. I flew through the math portion. When I got to the reading part, I fell asleep two questions into it. I woke up with 15 minutes left to the test. As a result, I wound up in remedial reading. Probably anybody else would have went to the college and explained what happened. Nope not me. I went to Reading 101. I was surrounded by the ESL (English as a Second Language) and inbred crew. I was the star pupil. It would be the first and last time.
did you guys see this? huh? huh? huh? I found it!
han solo frozen in carbonite in the background of “heart of gold”
Hey! Wait a sec, that’s not Han Solo. That’s Bessie Duo.
I’d just like to take a moment to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your avatar, Tigh…
it actually shows up very nice when in motion. supposedly he is in the ‘trash’ episode too, but i have yet to find him. - haven’t looked, either
i really enjoy tricia’s boomers
I actually learned to read before Kindergarten - my mom was a stay-at-home-mom who read to me and my brother every day. I can remember coming home from school one day and my brother was giggling like a fool (he’s 3 years younger). He “helped” mom read books and record them onto cassette tape so that he and I could read by ourselves with our cool blue tape player. Hey - in 1975, books on tape weren’t really heard of! I then was always in the “advanced” reading group and I can remember reading Nancy Drew and Laura Ingalls Wilder in the first grade. I’m guessing that’s not such a big accomplishment now (jeez - my nephew took Spanish and Computers in Kindergarten  ) but in 1976 it seemed cool when everyone else was still reading Dick and Jane and Spot (which I thought was the LAMEST reading material ever, even then!).
I have always read above my grade level. Unfortunately, because reading was always easy, I had a hard time studying. I know, it sounds dumb, but I read so darn fast it doesn’t always sink in or I don’t quite get all the finer details that I needed. In high school - no big problem. In college - HUGE problem. Studying was something I really had to learn in college because I didn’t have to do hardly any of it in high school. I graduated but am somewhat ashamed to admit that my over-all GPA hovered dangerously close to 3.0. But I am the pround owner of a Speech and Theatre double-major (no minor). I must admit that while it’s a great accomplishment, it has no bearing on my job as a computer support analyst.
Weathertopfarm, I tried to find the source of that quote but haven’t been able to yet. I was pretty sure it was the writer bell hooks, but I looked through her essays in Killing Rage: Ending Racism and I didn’t come across it. If I do, I’ll post it here.
Also - welcome to the forum!
Aset, welcome as well! I don’t get the chance anymore to greet everyone by name but in this case, I do, so glad to have you here!
TighGetsPunchedALot, that is such a great screengrab. I’d have never seen the Solosickle on my own! In addition to being a great easter egg, I guess that makes sense in the context of the show. I mean, if Firefly happens 500 years in our future, then presumably the Star Wars movies exist as movies in the Firefly 'verse. (They’re probably on their 270th Special Edition release.)
Topgun, I recall that in elementary school I was reading at a somewhat higher level than my peers. I think I took my first crack at The Hobbit in 4th grade, if that’s any indication.
I just got my tickets for this!
Here is the link to the review in the SF Chronicle.

I’m guessing if it was anything major, it would have been discussed in Chasing Amy;

My best friend fraked a dead guy in the bathroom.
HOLDEN
You know that girl?
ALYSSA
I did. Before she was committed
I know I’m a week behind in Podcast, but there was something I wanted to comment about. everyone was talking about scifi at work. it was brought up in a “West Wing” Ep. Josh Lyman a character talks to on of the girls that works for the white house about a pin I believe she was wearing.
“I’m a fan. I’m a sports fan. I’m a music fan. And I’m a Star Trek fan. All of them. But here’s what I don’t do. . . . Let’s list our ten favorite episodes.Let’s list our least favorite episodes. Let’s list our favorite galaxies. Let’s make a chart to see how often our favorite galaxies appear in our favorite episodes. What Romulan would you most like to see coupled with a Cardassian and why? Let’s spend a weekend talking about Romulans falling in love with Cardassians and then let’s do it again. — That’s not being a fan. That’s having a fetish. — And I don’t have a problem with that except that you can’t bring your hobbies into work, okay. . . . Except on Star Trek holidays.”
I’m in the navy, and work on computer and weapon systems so the people I usaully work with are a bunch of nerds, girls and/or guys. maybe it’s easier for us to bring it to work when we so much alike I don’t know.

Ya know, I have been noticing a lot more since Chuck’s rant, the amount of advertising that uses the “geek” stereotype. Most of it is quite frankly insulting, not the amusing thing they think they are presenting. I’m beginning to come to the conclusion that I will not buy the product of companies who try to perpetuate this image.
Right now there are two companies that stick out for me running these types of ad campaigns: Alltel Wireless & Dominoes.
I also wanted to add, that part of the reason I think the image is popular right now is because of the popularity of films like Napoleon Dynamite & The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Having just hard this particular cast I thought I’d add in my 2 cents about the rant and the ensuing debate. Sorry If I’m repeating stuff that’s already been said but I don’t have time to read the whole thread.
Firstly, I don’t have any friends that properly watch sci-fi as much as I do. They’ve seen Star Wars and LOTR but that’s about it. I think, sadly enough, GWC is the first time I’ve heard others opinions on stuff like BSG and Star Trek etc because people I talk to in person don’t watch it. The geek culture has such a stigma and stereotype that people could be watching these things in secret, embarressed by it like I was for a number of years and so not say anything. And then you get the stupid “popular” people who feel they can then bash on this tuff. Not on I say
Hey CoolBeans1908, It is always shocking how much we have in common with each other. They are always bringing up things on the podcast that I am familiar with and I know if one of my friends or family were to listen I would just get blank faces. I just don’t get why those (self proclaimed as popular) people think sports are so great. While scifi is entertaining and intellectually stimulating, sports are just like reality tv but no drama, completely pointless. Don’t get me wrong, stuff like the Olympics are great. Elite athletes competing to see who is the best of the best, amazing. Don’t even get me started on Nascar and Golf. Anyways, welcome to the forum and hope to see ya around.
