GWC Podcast #85

On the actors in different things:

About three weeks ago my girlfriend and I were watching the Bridgette Jones Diaries. I about fraking shot myself till all of a sudden who do I see…none other than the great Gias Baltar himself! I was so shocked I nearly shot Dr. Pepper out my nose.

Ah, good times.

Did Baltar play Bridget’s gay best friend?!

So after lots of encouragement (and on the high recommendation of GWC regular Emily) I’m the proud owner of the first season of Lost. I hope I’m as into it as I am Heroes!

I am only 30 minutes into the podcast and am still wondering about the folks who visited. I know I have been busy lately but I could have said hello if I had warning via PM. :-\

As to librarians and drinking…be very careful with that. Librarians can and sometimes do put away quite a lot of liquor. I do not quite know why this happens but Will Manley has spun some tales of what goes down at American Library Association conventions. Mr. Manley was library director in the Arizona community of Tempe and is now City Manager.

Hopefully tomorrow I can pick back up with the podcast but that’s what I’ve got for now.

You know it.

Chuck, you are in for quite the treat with Lost. I envy you being able to binge watch the first three seasons if you so choose. Enjoy!!

  • Haven’t met any BSG folk yet - have met several other folks (all the crew from ST:TOS and TNG, Clint Eastwood, Jessica Alba, couple others…). But that would be MOST freakin’ cool. And I’ve noticed what Sean said is true - many of the TOPS and TNG and even Clint were really nice and down to earth - which is both surprising and pleasing.

  • Audra’s point about the possibility of Athena’s resurrection not working…I always thought that may be part of why Helo is so upset about the whole thing. He knows logically that she’ll be ok, but the act is so disturbing and there’s this vibe of…“what if” (to me anyway)

  • Speaking of Sharon…much love for her…just don’t entirely trust her. Look at “water” again from Season 1…just this feeling that at some point, her programming will kick in and it’ll be all over.

  • EMILY!!! Rockin’ the callin’. Getting over the flu…STILL more energy than me.

  • Don’t; fell bad about Lost - I just got into it. It’s good stuff.

  • Note: listening to the podcast with a slight hangover is pretty awesome - getting over the birthday celebratin’…

  • I remember that Lore episode…yeah, It was turd-rific.

  • miss the Deanna Troi scoop neck…sigh. But yeah, I must agree with Audra…Dee is hoooottttttt

  • Soon as you guys said “Ron Howard” I was like HUH??

  • Wow…I know less and less about knight rider than I thought. Tho I do remember Bonnie - she was pretty hot. And didn’t take no crap. It premieres on 2/17 - this coming Sunday - how do i know this…cuz I’m working on some advertising for it. (not nearly as exciting as you might think)

  • Strippers? In Automan?? What?? Where?? Damn - hate when I miss that…

  • I think Chuck mentioned that he liked “V”. If interested Chuck, a new book called V:Second Generation was just published by the creator of the series. Personally, I think it would be a great series to be “reimagined” a la BSG. Dark, serious, character driven - it’d be pretty sweet

  • Audra likes talking about butts I think

Hey Alpaca Herder, I didn’t realize your ‘Western State’ was Nevada. Speaking of alpacas I did see a herd of them in Seigfried and Roy’s Secret Garden exhibit. Passed along a picture to Sean to feed his obsession… There was also shirt sold at the Star Trek Experience that was quite apropos to recent podcast discussions and touched on an issue Chuck was trying to work through. I took a picture and will make it my avatar for the time being.

Audra, regarding seeing more of the actor who plays Anders: I read somewhere that he was cast in network comedy series. The story said it would start filming right after the strike was over, and they didn’t know how this would affect is participation in the remaining BSG episodes that still need to be filmed. I hope they can still work something out if he’s still integral to the storyline.

I’m coming out. There is no shame in it. I PM’d Solai and said,

"What’s with the new avatar?

I’m over here trying to put cunning and a wool hat together and all I’m coming up with is. It looks like Ron Weasel’s hat from Harry Potter."

Solai was kind enough to respond and explain it’s origin. So I guess my geek card will be revoked now. It’s not even warm yet. Dang.

If it is any consolation to anyone I come from a backwater town known as New York City. They have an antiquated tradition of flogging in the town square. It boost moral and keeps the townspeople honest. Anywho I made some inappropriate remarks about some former president’s wife and she gets to whip me while I sing ‘Hail to the Chief’.

Don’t know if that gets me any leniency but it’s worth mentioning.

It’s okay Phil. I am down here in Henderson which is notionally the suburb to Las Vegas. Relatively speaking, Henderson is the bigger city to which Las Vegas is the suburb. That a significant part of the Las Vegas Strip is not even actually within Las Vegas city limits (i.e. the Monte Carlo)…I cannot really explain.

Previously I was up north in what is referred to as “outlying rural Nevada” where most of the land is owned by the Bureau of Land Management and therefore has rather low population density.

I apologize for any difficulties caused…especially what in retrospect appears to be my impression of Lee Adama in this thread.

Oh, I’m so happy for you Chuck! Lots of great moments in season 1, I’m a bit envious of you for discovering it for the first time, I wish I could do that again. Season 2, though not as great as season one, adds a lot to the mythology of the series. Season 3 starts a bit slow but ends with a bang (propably the best episode of the whole series). And I like Season 4 so far. For those of you currently watching season 4, here’s a good weekly recap… in music:

Previously On Lost

Concerning anti-Mustang sentiment, I wasn’t planning on watching the new Knight Rider, but the one thing I did like was that Will Arnett from Arrested Development was voicing Kitt. However, they had to recast because Will Arnett voices GM commercials and GM had a beef with him playing a Ford. Now they recast Val Kilmer as Kitt.

awesome! I’m excited for you! =D so excited that I did some season 1 rewatching myself, just to be all “Chuck (and Audra?) is (are) going to see this for the first time!”

I got irritated with Lost around mid-2nd season. I gave up on it. (Which is funny, because Lost hasn’t had any significant delays… BSG on the other hand…)

A note on guns and KITT. KITT doesn’t need guns, that’s why it’s awkward and annoying. KITT is smarter than that. He figures out ways around problems, without guns. Putting guns on KITT cheapens him, because it’s a bit like saying “KITT can shoot his way out of anything” when we all know better than KITT wouldn’t do that.

As a side note: The original KITT was voiced by William Daniels (Mr. Feeny on Boy Meets World, or if you’re really geeky, John Adams in 1776). KARR was voiced by Peter Cullen, the voice of OPTIMUS PRIME!

SWEEEEEEETTT!!! Good pull!

FYI - The writers strike is over! Hoo-freakin-ray!!

Oh and Chuck - found out more about V Second Generation…yeah…um… about that…funny story…the book supposedly kinda sucks. So…really sorry. PLease disregard my recommendation

Awesome! I’m kinda pleased that having seen 1776 makes me even more geeky than I thought I was!

But as far as KITT goes, I’m really disappointed to hear that Will Arnett is no longer on the project! I loved him on Arrested Development… and honestly, Val Kilmer does nothing for me. (Found myself watching Red Planet on cable over the weekend and wow… that one is Mystery Science Theater 3000 worthy it’s so bad.)

SpiderPig, guess who is that geeky… ME and also (I think) CHUCK! [i]1776[i] is my favorite musical. And once, almost a year ago, Chuck (perhaps it was Sean, I couldn’t tell their voices apart for a while) made a very cunning (obscure) reference to the show in the cast. In Philly there is a Rocky Horror-style dress-up sing-along to the film version 1776 and in DC you can see it live at Ford Theater (where Lincoln, you know… was assassinated). Hooray for founding fathers history geeks!

So, this is sad but true: I really liked all of the Lor episodes of TNG when I was a kid. The ep y’all talked about in which Data goes all evil and teams up with Lor to conquer the universe was on cable recently and I was just embarrassed for my past self. That stuff was cheesier than cheez-wiz.

Congratz on (hopefully the two of you) finally taking the Lost plunge. Enjoy the ride, and as John Locke would say, have a little faith in the island. It’s my experience that the people that fell out of love with Lost did so because they “couldn’t see where it was going” and thought that the writers were just “making it all up as they went along”.
The story of the island is a long and mysterious one. Many questions are raised that will only be answered closer to it’s finale. But patience has been rewarded already, many times over. (this is the part where spoiler-boy bites his tongue instead of citing examples) Frustratingly for some, the answers given have often lead to more questions.
The writers have said from the get-go that not only do they have the themes and major plot points mapped out, but that they don’t introduce characters or other elements without knowing their complete arcs and how they fit into the big picture.
So enter into Lost knowing that it is a tightly written, fully imagined puzzle-box of a show and you should not be disappointed.

Also, Chuck and Audra, we’re happy to talk about Lost once you’ve seen the whole series so far next week. I did the same thing this summer. I went on vacation for a week to my mom’s house and watched season 1 with my brother in 2 days, and then we started on season 2. It’s a damn good show, though not as consistently strong as, say Firefly, or BSG. However, it’s soooo compelling you just can’t tear your eyes away!
