I finally watched Avatar (yes I have been busy) and listened to the podcast. Chuck’s comment about the couple walking out got me thinking of Avatar’s real life story and the root cause. Here it is:
Journalist John L. O’Sullivan’s notion of Manifest Destiny and the US’s Indian removal policy…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifest_destiny
So, substitute “Unobtainium” for Manifest Destiny, The “Evil Mining Corporation” (Hollywood’s favorite bad guy) for the US Government and blue aliens for Native Americans…Oh, and you need the do a 180 on the outcome of the war and ending!..Not so happy in real life!
Yeah, there’s also the ‘Vietnam Allegory’ trope in there, too, from what I’ve heard (still yet to see it. Got pulled the weekend I was going to.)
This may be fun (I assume it’s spoilery)
I totally love The Day The Earth Stood Still but I’m always thinking in the back of my mind…
“So, this guy shows up out of nowhere. He calls himself ‘Carpenter’ and is quickly murdered by the establishment only to arise three days later and tell everyone they should really be nice to one another. Sounds kinda familiar”
This film is also the origin of Klaatu Barada Nikto - a phrase I first heard in Army of Darkness but which crops up throughout film history.
I wonder if Klaatu (Michael Rennie) is related to Leoben (Keith Callum Rennie)
