GWC Podcast #192 (Halloween!)

The hub and I listened to the first half while out running about- he loved it, and said to the effect of “What can’t they do?”. I had to agree!

I grinned all during my morning shift listen, but have to listen again with headphones to catch the more subtle stuff the bus noise drowned out.

Yes, it was a bit rough (by GWC standards- we are sooo spoiled!), but danged if Chuck, Sean and Audra don’t hit it out time and again!

Thanks for the extra-special fun!

Oh, and I, too, got a lopsided grin at the pronunciation of carbine! lol!

I’ll roll with you guys till the wheels fall off!

PS: did I tell you guys about my zombie dream? I was doing some action-packed driving of a school bus, escaping angry villagers/zombies. The hub was dispatching my escape, Audra was the student I had to get to safety, and Chuck was my ammo support, sporting a shotgun and a wet mop, wearing only yellow swim trunk baggies! BWAAAAH! I don’t know where the Rev was- leading the attack? Laying down cover fire? lol!

Of course, this came off the heels of having seen the epic Zombieland!

Listening to the part about ODST, I heard something that had never occurred to me before. A quick Google search showed that others before me had had the same thot. :stuck_out_tongue:

Note the request for “pah”.

ETA: An appropriate quote from Chuck: “No assholes in Odious Tea.”

Arthur wept.

Speaking as someone who has never played Halo, I was curious what ODST stands for.
So I googled, and google tells me it stands for: Orbital Drop Shock Troopers.

Can someone answer me this: Are ODSTs in the game patterned after, or at all similar too the Mobile Infantry in the book Starship Troopers (I mean the book, not the horrible (tho entertaining) movie version.)?

I’ve never played either, but it seems both groups (Spartans and ODSTs) owe something to Heinlein.

Which in turn owes something to paratroopers and tankers, and so on.

They’re soldiers that’re deployed in drop tubes, and they form pretty tight units – at least the one we saw, as the story’s pretty much about the unit looking out for each other throughout the game. But that’s pretty much the end of the similarity. No super-suits like in the book. (I suppose you could count their armor/visor computer as such, but it’s really more like current stuff than what you see the MI using.)

Update: That’s a truly hideous cover. This is the one I’m used to seeing:

That’s from the Avalon Hill Game.

The covers weren’t the worst part. Mobile infantry couldn’t distinguish units a mile away…

I’m wondering if it is Jodie Foster. That couldn’t be possible, could it? Then again, it could be Jake Busey.

The only person I’m positively ruling out is Carl Sagan. Then again, this is GWC. Anything’s possible.

Spoiler alert:
It is Gary Coleman. There was a misunderstanding, the Crue wanted Gary Oldman, but that was mostly because Audra thinks he is cute. I heard Gary Coleman and booked him. Most of the interview is him saying, “What’choo talkin’ about Chuck?”. Hilarity ensues.
Tell me there’s a laugh track. hoping for a laugh track

I guarantee that hilarity, would in fact, ensue.
Note to self: Dont drink anything while listening to next week’s episode.

Holy crap, I have the same cover but for the book Armor.

NM It was only the same cover in my minds eye.

…Pics now

Thanks Chuck. Yeah, Pike’s right. My pic is from the Avalon Hill Game, which I have and have played many times. I forgot what the cover looked like on the edition of the book I read. I just re-read it last year, so I must have it handy somewhere.

I enjoyed the cast and the Halloween castplay. When Chuck asked “What’s that smell” my first thought was that Chuck smells undead people. And connected the Rover with the Winchester when mentioned. I was also yelling at my computer for them to take a cricket bat and a box of LPs with them when they were heading for the car.

Can’t wait for the Contact 'cast.

If I might be permitted to geek out about SotD just a few minutes more…

I can’t wait till y’all see Spaced because I’m watching the film again and remembering all the references from the series that made it into the movie. The third episode, “Art,” shows you Simon’s humble beginnings as a zombie slayer. Peter Serafinowicz says the line “Dom, hi” or “Hi, Dom” in the series and the movie. The grocery cart that lingers outside Tim and Daisy’s flat also appears in the street that Shaun crosses. Julia Deakin, the bizarro Mum, plays the landlady Marsha in Spaced. And Tyres, the brightly colored bike courier, appears as a zombie version of himself.

You’ll also see a lot of the same faces in Hot Fuzz. Although Rafe Spall’s face looks much more handsome as Detective Andy rather than that wanker at Foree Electric.

Chuck, no need to apologize for anything in this episode. This may have been my favorite GWC cast yet!

Audra foley’d every other sound you hear including rummaging, doors opening/closing, etc.

Holy Craaaaaaaaaap! I love a good sound effect, and I had no idea that was Audra. Speaking of sound effects, I loved the Halo weapons sounds in Halo part, you need to put that in more offten, no matter what your talking about.

And speaking of Gouls, I’ve been thinking about changing my middle name to “And-his-undead-army-of-Gouls”, and making people use both first and middle name. What do you think?

I dug that book! Read it on The Rev. Sean’s recommendation on a long ago podcast. Combed SD used bookstores with no joy. Finally found it in TX when we were there for the meetup at 1/2 Price Books! Woo-Hoo! Coincidence? I think not!

Wow. You are WAY quicker than I.
