GWC Podcast #118

In the middle of listening and kind of random off topic comment, but thought it funny that Chuck brought up “The Fifth Element”.

In college, I was in a film class where my professor, all educated in the world of films, especially in the area of SF, told us the very first day in class that his favourite all time guilty pleasure was…The Fifth Element! He argued vehemently that it was so much more than just a hollywood popcorn blockbuster, and we must have dissected each and every scene of that movie at least half a dozen times in the course of the semester. So while I still think it’s a silly Hollywood blockbuster, I was won over by his efforts, and totally love and appreciate that film now. It’s awesome!

And on The Sarah Connor Chronicles: IWhen it came out last year, I tried watching the first episode and fell asleep in about five minutes flat. I tried again, and fell asleep AGAIN. I gave up after that. Should I even try again?

Oh, Chuck just said Fuck on the podcast. Was that a first official censor bleep?

Dude, I love The Fifth Element. I’m not sure I’d even call it a guilty pleasure, I just love it. My MIL and I bond over that movie.

I’d sign up for that class in a heartbeat.

I’ve been wondering for days what bkitty’s new avatar is supposed to be. and just now, I saw it, and I can’t figure out how I didn’t see it before.

it’s a sailboat!

WRONG IT’S A FRAKKIN SCHNOONER

(You see what I did there, I reversed it)

…is hit & miss, but worth watching if you’ve got a Terminator Jones. Long story short, it’s out of continuity, and it has some fun with the ideas of the Terminator universe.

Lots of Terminators. Terminators here, time travellin’ here, time travellin’ there. As the Jerky Boys would say, they’re silly with it. Not, like, time travelling back and forth to 1776. But when the show’s in doubt, somebody pops back in time. And there is – so far – one jump forward.

The biggest criticism I have of it – and pardon if you’ve already read me make this comment in the other Terminator threads – is that, as one Ain’t It Cool reviewer said, the TV versions of Sarah and John Connor are dumber than a bag of hammers. Which is kind of necessary to keep getting them in scrapes week after week.

Best Buy has Season One for like $26. Amazon.com has it new for like $19. Or $1.99 an episode on Amazon Unbox downloads. Amazon also has Season 2 episodes, and the show airs Mondays at 8 EST, right before Heroes.

Season 1 is 8 or 9 episodes. Doesn’t take that long to watch.

And, hey, Bear McCreary does the music. And Summer Glau – River from Firefly/Serenity – is the Hot Girl Terminator Sent Back In Time To Protect John Connor… And Maybe Teach Him To Love. I wish I were kidding about that last bit.

Did anyone else’s iTunes NOT download #118 yet?
Guy on the left: I am the Terminator. Are you Abigail Conner, great, great, great, great grandmother of Sarah Conner?

Abigail Conner: Why yes, I am Abigail Conner. How may I help you?

Benjamin Franklin: Come with me, my dear, if you want to live.
Someone on podcast #118 said something 'bout the above post from the podcast #117.

(Isn’t that a line from a song: “Someone said something 'bout…” An Eagles song maybe? Craaap. That’s gonna bug me all day figuring out what song.)

Look - Cameron couldn’t even get the story of the sinking of the Titanic correct. Yet it is the biggest $$$ movie of all time.

As if the drama of the actual event doesn’t surpass most fiction, he rewrites the entire event - right down to having the officer on watch (1st officer Murdoch I believe) at the time the ship struck the ice berg blow his brains out - which of course never happened. The family of the officer was mighty upset, you may recall. Wonder if some $$$ changed hands there too?

In any event the guy (Cameron) is insufferable. If you haven’t seen it and are interested in the story, the British movie “A Night to Remember” (circa 1960), based on Walter Lord’s book about the sinking, is TERRIFIC. As in TERRIFIC. The last half hour or so is difficult to get through without becoming upset.

No, it’s not the first. Both Sean and I have let them slip before, causing me to have to return and bleep them before distribution. But in this case, I was simply quoting – and the quote just didn’t ring right without it.

James Taylor, “Her Town Too” ?
“Someone said, someone said
Something bout, something else
Someone might have said about her”

Just downloading the podcast now, and will be listening this AM…Can it be as fun as the live Frak Party was Saturday !! I’m betting…yes.

Thank You!! I swear I would have grown obsessed as the day wore on trying to figure out what that line was from.

dang! (sorry barb). I didn’t even notice that I had used the same avatar.(as TighGetsPunchedALot) Sorry.

I’m about half way thru the podcast but i wanted to jump on for a bit and mention some things

Audra: I love the Mallrats quote. That is one of my favorite Kevin Smith movies.

The Jon McClain killing a helicopter with a car thing. If memory serves me correct i remember him saying “I didn’t think that would work” right after he does it. Which for me makes it work. Its like it was an accident 1 in a million type thing.

Also I wanted to mention they psychologist from T-2 is brough up in the Sarah Connor chronicles. He actually plays a kinda big part in the first season.

Ok back to listening.

He never said that, he said “I ran out of bullets”

Ah…i thought he said both…but my memory is stupid…well its stupid when it comes to movie quotes (but i know the real true quote from Vader "No, I am your father…)…yet i can remember conversations that i had like 5 years ago.

You vil eet da donaaaats!!
ROFL!!

I can’t remember song lyrics to save my life but I can remember the various weapons in use by, you name a nation, and if asked a question specific details of books and movies and tv I’ve watched years ago

I seem to be a bit daft as I can’t work out how to type in a spoiler code, but I was going to talk about this a bit for those who don’t want to go back and watch season 1

[frak]Sekret Stuff[/frak] only with “spoiler” instead of “frak.” It’s in the FAQ if you forget.

Fun podcast to listen to… thread drift is part of the podcast, too, hehe!

I particularly enjoyed the Back to the Future chat.

And I’ll reserve my judgment on the Terminator franchise, still, since I haven’t been able to get any of the movies from my local library (sad!)
