I touched on this in a lost thread from yesterday, but the Podcase does a much better job (also known as pandering to the boss).
My guess is that for purposes of the show, not going to be building any new of the 7’s and no Death Star 2, I mean Hub 2, coming down the road.
So, what were the rebel Cylons “thinking”? They cannot procreate with each other - only with FF’s and humans. Which, of course, should ultimately lead to the extinction of their species.
Pretty strong move. Does it show a deep desire to be, essentially, human? If so, why? Plot driven common ground is one good reason. “Love” as discussed by C6 way back when may be another - although I am not sure how.
What about this - For such a religious species the 7’s, we have not heard much, if anything, about their thoughts re an “eternal soul” or an afterlife. (Actually, we haven’t heard all that much about those issues from the humans either - but put that aside.) Of course, the only way for 7’s to have eternal life, to “see” God is to die and not be resurrected. Wonder it that has some role in this otherwise bizarre decision?
I offer this thought with NO editorial comment about the validity or invalidity of any religion. However, whether one is a “believer” or not, one thing is clear - belief in a higher power and eternal life with him/her/it after death has motivated an awful lot of “our” history. So why not the Cylons.
As an aside, C6 being pregnant by Tigh is a pretty good indication that the F4 or FF are not “immortal” - they get old and die.
Regarding DS9 and Kai Opaka: Did she ever return after being left on the ‘resurrection moon’? I remember thinking that was a lost opportunity to bring her back when the how wormhole beings war was coming to a head at the end of the series. My memory could be faulty…
Regarding the Mystical Black Woman stereotype is there a way to link to the blog posts where we had this discussion previously? There were a lot of good points made then. I remember it happening some point in the middle of 2007 (not that helps really). The only positive thing about the stereotype though is that it gave Whoopi Goldberg an oscar and role on ST:TNG…
oh, please. i find the topic fascinating, and quite on point. whoopi on tng was also a ‘sage’ of sorts, dispensing her advice as a middle aged mystical black woman bartender instead. this is not unlike the ‘non threatening black male’ figure syndrome either, if they’re not replaced by “sexy black woman who’s less threatening to the white male and could hook up with them instead”. look at the only really, really mute cylon out of the bunch, and pretty much the only black dude around: simon.
and hey, if anything else, there would be loads more asians and indians roaming around instead of primarily white people on the ship, if just playing by the numbers game of the world. but it’s understandable.
I don’t know, it’s still a scifi world, a different world, so who knows what kind of races they have and don’t have and in what proportion.
But yes, Simon is an underrated character, but so is Doryl. All we get to see anymore is Cavil as the head of the Cylon Conservative Party and not much else.
I loved the Darth Roslin comments. I agree, the path of vengeance with Baltar has been brewing for some time. I was a mess, thinking Baltar was going to die. I’m glad she realized she couldn’t cross that line. Another great insight was Chuck’s bit about Roslin seeing herself through Bill’s eyes. I have done that many times.
BTW the second book in the Tron Trilogy is “Dark Force Rising”.
Just started, but can I just say, I hate to sound a little rude, but i think the caller from New York was the real cranky person in this podcast (maybe i was cranky if my call is played in this show hahah…I yell at tori sigh…shes not even in the episode)
Yeah, I’m with you, Em. Hey! The next talkshoe should be the Circle Jerk! Let’s just spend the whole time congratulating each other for hanging in so long and maybe a teaspoon of BSG talk! You know- like always! LOL!
Now for real.
This is a wonderful community.
You can never say ‘I love you’ or ‘I care’ too much.
All too often, appreciation for the good things goes unspoken. It’s very easy to just enjoy and not realize how special something is until it’s threatened or gone. If we take the time to thank Chuck, Audra, and the Rev. Sean for giving us a great place to play, and shout each other out- so much the better!
I will listen to the gang’s observations on anything! I will be impatiently refreshing my itunes when I know the cast is due to be up! I will send in a call meant to tickle Chuck under his chin when he sounds cranky, and anything to get Audra to sing or beat-box, and I really want to know the colors (or lack thereof) that Sean sees! I want asinine wandelings! Even if I can’t play them in the bus!
I WANT MY GWC!
And if it’s not what you want, or it’s not a community you want to be a part of- you have the free will to walk away.
Or stay.
You are welcome to stay and be a part of this warm, funny, troll-free community. We want you here. We want your take on the show. We want you to call in and be a goofy nerd or an intelligent observer, or whatever you want to be!
We can get a little passionate (understatement) sometimes. Especially if you bag on the Trinity. Then you need to watch your six. Hot Dog’s rash will be all over you! And we will not try to save you.
That said, we hope to hear/read from you soon. As a part of our community.
Emily: We didn’t play your call! Sorry! We’ll get to it next time though! We had so much to talk about this episode we ran out of time.
bkitty: Thanks for your support. you can has cheezburger now.
Phil: I can’t believe I didn’t think of Guinan when were discussing the “wise woman” role in the podcast. You’re absolutely right- and re: Opaka, I’ll have to check, but I’m almost certain she makes an appearance in one of the late episodes in season 6 or 7.
Solai: Can you make a me a shiny dogtag too? Whatever name you think is best.
I first want to say that reading the board before listening to the podcast can really make an interesting read. Like what could Chuck be ranting about? I am a half an hour in and had to stop to write a note. Ok, you spend hours of your time without pay ( and use your own money) to talk about a show. Well of course you will be on the positive side. If you did not like the show’s concept why would you do a podcast for free? So that those listening to you can call you cranky. Cranky should only be used by close friends. So maybe Chuck is cranky without coffee but so am I.
GWC is a glass is half full podcast and that is why I like it. You can not agree and everyone is happy. I even have been on my pet rants on the board and no one called me cranky. I even picked on a cat lover and she forgave me so as the kids say can’t we just get along.
You 3 are great and not enough people spend time being positive. So Chuck please feel free to rant, I do. Just had a thought Romo does rant a lot and well, he is really cool.
I really appreciated the discussion on the Mammy figure. Elosha, whether it’s intended or not, DEFINITELY pushes some cultural buttons, and says more, actually about our culture than it does about Battlestar Galactica. Audra, you are awesome.
