GWC Podcast #103

By what sorcery did you evade the magic mirror’s gaze? A witch! A witch!

I remember the Captain- I didn’t watch Romper Room, though.

Yep, over 40 ovah heah! lol!

Nobody said I had to act my age!

How do I end up remembering Captain Kangaroo too? He aired on PBS in Cleveland way back when.

same here, bk. that Romper Room chick freaked me out

There are more 40+ GWC than one would think. Shall we discuss BOZO

65% Chance, I gotta at least try to save my loved ones:)

Oh how I yearned for her to see me in the Magic Mirror!

Yes - In my time she of the mirror was named “Miss Jean”. My name was never called and, well, the rest is history.

Ahh, The Captain and The Treasure House and the “keys” to The Treasure House. Those were the glory years. As you may know, Bob Keeshan, who was the one and only Captain, got his start on kid TV by playing Clarabell (sic?) the Clown in The Howdy Doody Show.

I remember both from way back when. How about the original Zoom? The show that made blue and red prison stripes fashionable. I tried to add an additional L my name just so Fannee Doolee would like me (my dad would tease me mercilessly that she liked him). Could never speak Ubbi-Dubbi fluently though…

I remember Bozo too, but I’m only 36. I guess I started watching TV particularly young. :stuck_out_tongue:

I remember Captain Kangaroo and his big poofy 70’s 'burns, hehe. I remember Romper Room but didn’t watch it. I guess when you’re a kid with four channels and PBS reruns all the older stuff, you get to have things in common with the over 40 crowd.

You know what really freaked me out? Lamb Chop. Lamb Chop’s Play-a-Long. What kind of cruel person names her lamb puppet LAMB CHOP??? “Here’s my cow friend, cheeseburger, and my pig friend, BLT!”

My favorites were Reading Rainbow, 3-2-1 Contact, Sesame Street. But you don’t have to take my word for it!

Oh, 48% chance of surviving a zombie apocolypse for me.

I guess that makes sense. I did watch a lot of PBS, which was how I got my Doctor Who fix.

You know what really freaked me out? Lamb Chop. Lamb Chop’s Play-a-Long. What kind of cruel person names her lamb puppet LAMB CHOP??? “Here’s my cow friend, cheeseburger, and my pig friend, BLT!”!

Heh. Never really thought about it that way. That is sort of disturbing when you put it that way.

My favorites were Reading Rainbow, 3-2-1 Contact, Sesame Street. But you don’t have to take my word for it!

Other than Sesame Street, I remember watching the others but not much else about them. Of course, I recognized the host of Reading Rainbow as Kunta Kinte, long before he was better known for wearing a hair band on his face.

Just 45% for me. I’d probably do better if I could get over my irrational fear of shooting my grandmother in the face.

I (of course) remember The Captain from before he had those side burns. Before he was modernized he used to wear a cap like RR conductors in The States used to wear on passenger trains (I know, nobody remembers those either) and (this is the BEST part) - a semi military coat with emormous pockets in which he kept all sorts of great things to astonish his young viewers - hence the name Captain KANGAROO. If you were a child of the '50’s he was the best.

Shari Lewis and the ill named Lamb Chop. Boy was she pretty (Shari that is). And despite the name, in classic puppet fashion Lamb Chop was the wise guy, except she was a girl.

Then there were the local TV station kid show types. I’ll spare you all but their names - Rex Trailer (western theme), Big Brother (yup) Bob Emery (totalitarian theme - just kidding) and (best of all) Salty Brien (nautical theme).

so do I–he’s the reason for my clown fear. I was a weird child

I also loved Square One… given my interests as a child, it’s amazing that I study books and not numbers or stars.

I was also a child who was only allowed to watch 2 channels: PBS… and Disney. In my adult life, I still watch PBS. Good times.

Oh, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that someone’s Mom taped for us without commercials.

I can still do the windmill-arm-thing.

Well as I was a child in the 60’s I have pretty much the same memories…except here it was the Captain Jinks and Salty Sam show.

Funny that Captain Kangaroo was brought up…remember the red suit with the white trim on the lapels and pockets? When I saw Hillary Clinton in the blue suit with the white trim on the pockets…I wondered where she got the “Captain Kangaroo suit.” Does that make me a bad person?

The best part is that the lady who played Lamb Chop really loved the twisted irony of that. She loved ordering lamb chops in restaurants.

Yikes! The mere mention of Bozo is, I believe, a final cylon activation word for me. I am going to pretend that I didn’t hear it. I don’t want to run screaming down the street!
