For those of you who were alive in 1984...

Pong was the first game I ever saw…Lodged in the corner near the entrance to the local department store, it was seemingly 11 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The thrills afforded one as they manipulated a big white square ball with a big white rectangular paddle seem a bit pale now, but at the time it was literally the only game in town.

The first computer game I ever played was Lunar Lander on a commercial timesharing system (at my mother’s work.)

It was a bit frustrating, since it was a text-only interface and didn’t have much by the way of instructions. It would tell you your altitude and speed, and you had to figure out how long to fire your retro-rockets. Overdo it and you’ll run out of fuel. Underdo it and you’ll crash.

I ended up just trying to see how big a crater I could make.

true dat homie

I remember Lunar Lander…except it wasn’t at my Mom’s work…it was at mine. :frowning: I think I made 1 landing. Had an anoying coworker that would walk past, looking at my screen, and say “you’re dead” and sure enough I’d crash. I’ve never liked that guy.

What system were you on? I’ve been trying to find that version.

I don’t think the version I played will be out there. We were on an IBM System/3 or System/38 (mid-range machines, can’t remember which one) and we got the proggie from our friendly IBM service guys. I’m sure it was converted from some other system/language to run on our machine. Wish I could remember more…

One more thing I do remember was that our game program was converted from a mainframe…don’t know what one. I google Lunar Lander but don’t see anything similar so far…this one is closest:

But what I remember was more text based. Hopefully it’s out there somewhere. Prolly in a book on Basic programs since most of those were text.
