Fallout 3

Yea i have had similar expierences. I was running from the town with the fire ants back to Megaton and i was crossing over an overpass. I see on my radar/compass a bunch of red dots off to my left. I jump into sneak mode and crawl over and look down. its a bunch of raiders racing molerats. They open fire on me and i flee, not because i’m scared of them but because i just want to get to Megaton and sell everything on me cause i am pretty loaded down.

Another cool thing i was sneaking around the Jefferson Memorial and got to over hear a conversation between two Super Mutants. It was really funny. They were talking about what they were before they mutated. One of them couldnt remember what he was or even if he was always a man. After listeing to their conversation i snuck up on another of their comrades and pickpocketed him…but instead of taking his nailboard i stuck a frag mine in his pocket and watched him explode.

I have also really learned to love the Combat shotgun. 2 VATS shot to he head is always a great way to deal with pretty much any enemy. Also i just started using the Shishkebab on occasion. Not so much for combat, i still rely on my guns for that. But i do love to run around and set the corpses of my enemy’s on fire.

I also am playing the goody goody this go around. Its kinda neat now that ever now and then someone will run up to me and give me something. Its not much once i got like 18 bottlecaps once i got a Nuka-Cola. But its still neat.

I can’t wait to play thru again this time as a chic, to see how people treat me differently, and to play as a bad guy. Also i might play again as a neutral character.

I am still doing the main story but doing it after every 5 or 6 side quests i do. So i have put in about 50 hours already or so and am only about a 1/4 of the way thru the main story i think. I’m having a blast just exploring the world and listening to GNR. I love the music the 3 Dog plays

Yahoo for those who don’t like watching heads explode off bodies! I have been a little worried about the gore. Thinking…on the one hand sounds like sooooo much fun but on the other hand – exploding heads! Yikes! Now it appears from this link you can cut the gore right down.

Yes, I know that Fallout 3 is supposedly all about watching heads explode off bodies, but it is nice to know that those of us who don’t really like this part of the game can avoid it. Forget Xmas, I’m getting this now!

For those who enjoy gore, I hear there is a Bloody Mess perk. Does that make much of a difference to the game? I wonder why the less gore perk is so hidden? Ah well, in any event, it is there. Glad I found it as your descriptions of the game are really making me jealous.

Bloody Mess just changes it so that every time you kill an opponent you get the most violent possible death, so it doesn’t make anything bloodier as such, it just makes it a lot more common. It does really put it over the top into “too much” territory.

The perk also gives you +5% damage with all weapons and some people get it for that reason but in general it really isn’t worth it. (Though you could take it with the no-gore option and still get the +5% damage.)

Yea, When you shot gun a gun in the head its almost always a nice treat of gooey goodness. Some one needs to tell Sean and Chuck about this game. Sean would love it i think, having the ability to do whatever you want and however you want pretty much. It gives you much more freedom than Mass Effect did.

Dude, i was a mean nasty chic the first round. Starting my 2nd (Yes 2nd. i have no life) as a good boy. really.

I have never spent so much time on a video game since KOTOR 1 & 2. Can’t wait for additional add on’s… Extra missions ? New NPC’s? Can’t wait to see what they do.

I did kill my first town last night. They were a bunch of cannibals (not the vampiers i am still cool with them). It was only 4 people but i shot them good. Actually i tried to plant a bomb on them while they were sleeping but they woke up. So i shot them in the head with my .45. But i only did this after talking my way out of them trying to kill me. Next time i might just join their little cult…

I missed alot the first round, just wanted to see the story. Now im going back and trying to do everylittle thing.

There is a door in vault 101 right at the start that sayd you need 100 lockpick to access. I tried putting all my points on that skill. And still cannot get in there. WTF.

Any1 ??

I’m bummed. I bought Fallout 3 for the PC only to find it won’t play. Crashes as soon as I try to start a new game. I searched the web and found hundreds of others with the same problem. I can’t even return it as it is software. Sigh. I have a rain cloud over my head today.:frowning:

If you goto the Fallout Website they may have a patch. I don’t know the sys requirements for the games but i am going to assume your comp is within the min requirements. But maybe you will need to turn the settings down.

[sigh of deep depression]. My system is beyond the requirements and there are screams for a patch on Bethesda’s own forums – but that could take months. I don’t wanna wait [stamps feet], no fair, no fair!

The forums have some pretty advanced gamers with scoocum computers who are complaining. They are working on fixes, most of which are sooooo beyond my understanding. But seems that there is still no happy fix for all. Bethesda remains silent.

I guess I have no alternative than to heat up the Wii and spend yet another frustrating evening playing the same part of Zelda over and over in some vain and pathetic attempt to get out of the Gorgon Mines.

Sob. Feel sorry for me.:frowning:

Well i was experiencing some troubles on my 360. When i play it for a couple hours it will occasionally freeze up. but thats about it. Thats also why the most advanced game i play on my PC now is Peggle. That is until the new Star Wars MMO comes out then i will have to get a new computer to play on.

Check to see if you have the ffdshow audio/video codec installed. Apparently this is an issue that has been discovered that wasn’t caught before launch. If you have ffdshow (or Tversity, which apparently uses it) you can get the game to run by uninstalling (not disabling, actually uninstalling) ffdshow.

The problem is that the introductory movie collides with the ffdshow codec and crashes. They are working on a fix for the problem but right now the only way around it seems to be to uninstall ffdshow.

Several people on another forum I frequent had the same problem and this fixed it for them.

Where would this ffdshow be? Last night I did a search for it (using Vista’s search on the bottom of the start menu) and it did not show up. I am not sure Vista’s search is accurate as it did not find a few other things that I found later using the old fashioned hunt and peck method.

I also went into control panel, programs area to see if ffdshow was something I could uninstall, but it is not.

It would probably be under the add/remove programs dialog (which is somewhere in the control panel but I still get lost in the Vista panel myself). Look for either of the things I mentioned.

Also, Bethesda has just released a patch for the PC version that is supposed to eliminate some crash issues but I’m not sure what it involves. (There is a persistent crash-to-desktop on exit that they may be fixing.) You might try downloading the patch (it should start automatically when you try to launch the game through the launcher) to see if that cleans anything up.

OMG!! You are ON THE BALL!! I would never have checked for a patch as I checked at 10 pm last night and saw nothing! It doesn’t mention my particular bug (ie crashing before starting) but it is worth a try.

Vista appears to have all the add/remove stuff under somthing called programs or whatever. Bottom line, I spent ages looking for add/remove before I found it. (WHY rename something that is perfectly fine as is I will never know.) No ffdshow.

Wish me luck. Patching tonight! Weeee, I’m happy again! I get to play with my new toy.

Can’t. Its a glitch. There is apparenly a patch that puts a cute little sign that says “out of order” on it:p

My attempt to run this game has ended in misery. I wish I could return it, but of course it is software and so I am stuck.

Edit:
Now that I am over my tantrum from last night, I felt I should warn anyone thinking of buying this game on PC. Take a look at the web sites first, try googling “fallout 3 and crashes” (or bugs). It appears that some PC’s can’t play this game and the problems have nothing to do with specs. The difficulties are probably multi-factoral; but in any event, it is beyond my ability to fix. The patch only deals with very limited issues.

Bottom line: the PC version of this game is a bit of a crap-shoot. Might work wonderfully, might not. So in the words of Dirty Harry:

“You’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya punk?”

This punk was unlucky.

I have been playing this game on PS3 and I think it is one of the best games I have ever played. It is definitely better leveled than Oblivion, but now that I have maxed out my level, I actually miss the survival elements from when I first started…I may increase the difficulty setting.

Ok - I’ve purchased and installed FallOut3. I’ve just started playing so I’ve only escaped 101 and am out in the town. The only question I have at this point - are those maps in the “Info” worth anything? I’ve been trying to figure out how to use them to navigate but evidently I’m just stupid. Now, if I could just get my right-click finger to quit discarding things, I’d be doing good…

The Maps are invaluable. But they are kind of hard to read. I use the World Map alot more than i use the Local Map but they both get used on a steady basis. In the Info section you can highlight Quests and make whatever quest you want to be your Active Quest. Then in your HUD on the compass you will have a Solid Whitish Green arrow that indicates the bearing you need to follow. Also you can set a Way Point if you want to go to a town or place on the map you have not gone to yet. That is indicated by an outline of an arrow on your map/compass.

It took me awhile to figure that stuff out but i use it all the time now.
