Ah, Commander Keen. What I wouldn’t do for that stun gun of his some days…
Fortunately, I only have to use Excel about once a month (today in fact). But Word I use mostly every day. I have no love for either, but if you ask me to make a list things I know about Word and a list of things I know about my car, my list for Word would be much much longer.
…and I’m not just saying that to get me one post closer to 1000 posts.
TRS-80, Apple I / II, or Sinclair ?
In high school we did basic, on a DEC PDP 11. Yeah, that would be an 8 inch floppy.
My first spreadsheet was VisiCalc.
A GUI was still something sticky and gross.
I know that the 8088 was the predecessor of the 8086.
Z-80 ? No, not a sports car.
An amber CRT was a LUXURY.
IBM PC talking to an IBM mainframe? Can you say IRMA - Both shift keys pressed at the same time.
I ran CAD on an Intel 80286 and we thought is was FAST.
I built computers for Entre’ computer center, and hard disks were optional.
I built Novell networks and “generated” an operating system based on hardware settings. My first server had 300 megs and it took 3 years to max it out.
I knew the difference between extended and expanded memory… And why more was not always better.
I used to “repair” computers, not just throw them away a get a new one.
Lotus’ answer to early Windows based Excel was WYSIWYG
Arcnet. cheap and easy to configure. Same cable used for cable TV.
Thinnet, cheap, but not reliable due daisy chaining. Limited to 600 feet.
Thicknet used “taps” that actually punctured the cable.
Ethernet - What part of CSMA/CD don’t you understand?
OK I have officially and completely (out) dated myself.
