They make too many assumptions to really predict anything like a global holocaust. We don’t know what the DS2 is made of or how complete the construction was (only that you can has a dog fight inside it). We do know that it is being built by a every large government and most likely by the cheapest bidder and with the least expensive materials (with a ton of corners cut to make the milestone of getting the main weapon working). The biggest thing they don’t take into effect is that IT’S A FRACKING MOON. They completely ignore the parent planet and the effect it might have.
Doesn’t really make much of a difference, since the effects we’re concerned about are within the local (Endor) gravity well.

Well we know that the theory doesnt hold up… becuase the Truce at Bakura, which takes place after Jedi has everything just fine on Endor. As well as a few other books have Endor being just fine and a place that peole visit. ( such as Jedi going to the grave of Vader ( well Anakin). And such. So the theory isn’t true becase the fictional story says it didn’t happen.

According to some of the novels (by authors that I like 
), the Imperials propagated the theory of the Endor Holocaust to make the Rebels look bad. In reality, the “fireworks” seen at the end of RotJ were snubfighters blowing up the larger bits of debris into manageable chunks so it could burn up in the moon’s atmosphere. What, did you really think the Rebels traveled around with a cargo hold of Roman candles just in case they happened to beat the Empire?

how cannon the idea is. Cannon generally being considered as the stuff shown to us in the movies and therefore supersedes everything else. Generally the next level of ‘accuracy’ is the stuff released by Lucasfilm or official guides, etc. Lowest level is things like the novels or expanded universe.
Some people argue that it isn’t cannon because we don’t actually see it in the movie, and then they argue that what we do see of the party implies that the planet was in no immediate danger.
Other people argue that based on the laws of physics and measurements taken from known sizes to determine the size of the DSII and its orbit the debris would have logically fallen to the planet and wiped out life.
Everybody knows that the atmosphere of Endor’s Moon was saturated with GLEPs. GLEPs are exotic particles that maintain stability by linking together in vast quantities. They are most well known for their reality bending, anti-plausibility properties. GLEPs could easily have shielded that entire system from debris.
