[Eastern] BSG 4x16 Deadlock

Ok, I can’t believe I am saying this, but I really had problems with this episode.

First and foremost - I LOVED the previous episode - and I was thrilled that Ellen seemed to return as a wiser, more centered person who, once she had all her memories, had so much more depth than her previous character - but in this episode that Ellen was gone, and she was her petty, ridiculous, jealous, immature self - I didn’t like how they played that.

Second, for some reason I was really bothered by Galen’s vote to go - without any discussion of Niki. Maybe it’s because I’m a new parent, and I know he’s not the biological dad, but having raised the kid for almost 2 years you’d think that would have played into his decision at least a little bit - it just seemed out of character.

Third - I have no understanding of what lessons Adama and Roslin took away from the mutiny - if they’re grudingly going along with a more integrated ship, they certainly aren’t explaining it to the people . . . and they’re completely not dealing with the fact that there are civilians starving on board . . . it didn’t seem like they even KNEW.

I guess I just found the episode a little fragmented in points - I didn’t understand if they were trying to suggest that Ellen somehow caused Six’s baby to die (all this talk about needing love, lt’s the proof of love, so did she cause six to question Saul’s love and then the baby died due to that - at times I thought that might be what they were suggesting).

I don’t know, I guess I was a little disappointed in this ep - I haven’t felt that way about any other episode.

BUT ONE CONSISTENT THING REMAINS - I STILL HATE TORI!!!

Fourth

The parental thing is a good point.

I was also thinking that his re-Chiefness and his interest in the ship itself would have him vote to stay. But I guess they needed someone to vote with Tory. Who appears to want to throw humanity under the bus. I think she needs to get her memories back…

I agree. It was a really odd episode. It seemed to be way to fragmented and the Chief looking to leave seemed so at odds with how he has been acting the rest of the season.

I can not seem to get on.

Yeah, I mean he protected the kid (and presumably worried about him) all through cylon-occupied New Caprica . . . and now he’s going to abandon him when the humans just had a mutiny and are clearly going to hell in a handbasket? Seems odd.

I ended up getting to it from talkshoe’s page rather than a link… which might help

I agree! That decision seems to come from nowhere. He has had the opportunity to go over the the basestar a while ago. I think it is just a plot device (or I seem to remember from RDM’s podcast that they were going to have him go to the basestar but decided to scrap that story line. So him wanting to leave could be a loose end from a scrapped story ark.)

I am a bit on board with others who were a bit disappointed by this one. Well disappointed might not be the right word, disconcerted maybe. On one level I really loved some of the scenes. Watched it ‘in the moment’, I thought it had some great moments.

Saul and Adama when Saul loses his son.

The FF gathered around Anders discussing what to do with Ellen pissed at Saul for getting Six pregnant.

Baltar and Head Six, guns, more guns, bigger guns, better guns. Not sure why Adama would give them to Baltar but looks like we are headed for another showdown and Baltar is armed to the hilt.

But some character inconsistencies kind of bothered me.

The Chief voting to leave Galactica without hesitating without any angst, just can’t get my head around that. What about Niki, what about Galactica. Last week we got The Chief back, this week he is cabbage smelling Tyrol.

In the last episode we have Ellen taking the higher ground with Cavil and now she is manipulating, jealous, and bitter. This is the Ellen I might expect but very different from the Ellen we were introduced to last week.

Saul remains one of my favorite characters, he still knows who he is and to hell with what he is: “Whatever else I am, whatever else it means, that’s the man I want to be”

I thot it made sense. Recently, Galen got his job back but Adama has been throwing the cylon prejudice. He’s been on both sides of the hypocrisy. Like everyone else, he’s been through a bunch but he has come to terms with it. He knows who and what he is now.

He wants to be with his people. People who won’t treat him like an outsider.

I think that Ellen is a very complex person and that there are many layers to her. I think it’s got to be strange to have all of these old memories back and also still have the memories from her “human life”. It makes sense to me that it would be easier to take “the higher ground” with Cavil than it would be when faced with the knowledge that your husband, the love of your life, is having a baby with another woman. I’m not saying it’s rational but it is realistic that she would freak out. I don’t think the personality Ellen had while mixed in with the fleet was entirely fabricated by Cavil - I think petty and jealous are part of who she’s always been.

Thats a good point. We all (or at least many) take the high ground some of the time, other times we fall short and take the low road. Makes Ellen a bit more human.

OK, no one has mentioned it…but, was the leader for Sons of Aries Enzo? It looked like him! (Kat’s ex who was the drug runner)

edit had to add, according to a screen cap & Bear’s blog, Bear McCreary appeared in this episode when Kara/Chief were in the bar!
He supposedly appears in next weeks episode too!
