Do you hate kids who say that Star Wars is "old" ?

AMEN!!! My daughter has loved SW since she was just a wee kid (she was one when PM came out) and she can quote with the best of them too. Plus she can pick out every single Jedi in the Geonosis battle by name now. YAY!!

But here’s my “god I feel old” story. Back in the day (97 to be exact) they were talking about making a new trilogy and life was good. So the toy companies started capitalizing on the buzz and and put out new toys and the dreaded collectible card games. At that point I was helping my boyfirend run his comic store and we carried the card game so kids would come in to buy the rare cards and trade for ones they didn’t have. This one kid comes in one day and we’re chatting about the cards and he says something that I laugh about to this day.

Kid: “Hey, did you know they’re making a movie of this?”
Me: “Star Wars? Yeah, it’s kinda been out for a while now.”
Kid: “No, it’s not out yet.”
Me: “I mean the original ones. They’ve been out for a while.”
Kid (looking at me like I’m insane): “No, it hasn’t come out yet.”
Me: “Hon, they made Star Wars movies when I was your age. The new one isn’t out yet but the original trilogy came our a long time ago. That’s where the pictures on these cards came from.”
Kid: “You mean my dad wasn’t just making it up?”

Yeah, I’m old. My dad took me to see Star Wars (with no “A New Hope” after it) in 1976 and I’ve been a die hard fan ever since.

Wow, Henry V is pretty heavy for HS. But definitely good for comparisons to modern epics that kids can relate to. We didn’t touch anything harder Prince Whiny-Pants (often referred to as Hamlet).

(edit) ps: to address the thread, which I forgot to do in orig post, I do hate those kids. Well done epics never get old, they become classic.

As an uber fan, you know what makes my skin crawl? The kids who tell me the prequels are better than the originals. There is no debating with my 10 year old niece. In her opinion the prequels are better. Heh, but I think she only says that because she knows how to push my buttons. Now those are the kids that make me feel old.

SW isn’t old - Gone with the Wind is old. But that doesn’t mean it’s not great - most of my favorite movies were made long before I was born. In fact my favorite movie of all time is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and it came out in 1958.

I hate kids who think old things aren’t as good as new things.

Its really moronic, most kids dont get it AT ALL. They all follow similar paradigms and write the same essay over and over again. Ive read other kids essays and they, quite frankly, suck. Apparently because i dont use long winded metaphors that have no application other than to sound smart, I dont do as well. At least I’m not just pretending to know the story by using pretty language. /rant sorry i needed that

Id would go so far as to say its the best epic ive ever read/seen.

I can’t remember a time in my life when I hadn’t seen the Star Wars movies. They were engrained on my brain at a young age. Hell I saw them in the theatres when they got re-released in 97 and I was…8 at that point. Woah really? 8?

I live in a neighborhood with lots of kids, and it always brings me great joy to take a bike ride around on a Sunday morning and see the lightsabers scattered on front lawns here and there…

We’re not saying ‘old’ is bad and ‘new’ is good, are we?

No, just the misguided youth. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well old people are lame though so /ducks slings and arrows of the grand people of the gwc forum

I so understand. I saw The Star Wars movie that no one really cared it was number 4 with my father. We were selling our house and they wanted me out. Ok, My father was cool and wanted to see it too.

Even as a kid I liked old movies as in The Earth Stood Still. I hear they are remaking that one. OOOh why. The first is fantastic.

My students were shocked when I told them that I am Legend was not new. It was written in 1954! Three movies were made from that one book. Ender’s Game was written in the 70s before the internet was in use. Can you tell I am in education. The youth can be educated. We just have to push I mean help them along.

I would say the Illiad and Aeneid are the best epics I’ve seen/read, and Tolkien comes before SW, but it is damn good and highly entertaining, no doubt.

Last week I went over to the FDR memorial after dark and one of the tour guides was using a lightsaber to lead his group. I almost wanted to join them!

Isn’t it AMAZING how eerily similar OSC’s “nets” and “boards” are to todays blogs? He really did think it out well and get lucky in creating such an accurate description of how we communicate today.

Omega Man was one of the other adaptions. Correct?

Just wait till I get this trebuchet cranked up, you whippersnapper!

Yes, I think it also helped the “zombie” movement too.

I read it with my class that was made of mostly boys that were really into gaming. I chose the book because of that. They play killer games with people all over the world. They really had to think on that one.

I prefer the Odyssey to the Illiad (all those lists!) but they’re all pretty cool. And Tolkien was darn good at immitating the kind of language one finds in ancient epics, wasn’t he? Some of his book could’ve used editing in my estimation (I just can’t make it through Tom Bombadill again. I JUST CAN’T!!!), but he could spin a good yarn.

My point is, I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say Star Wars is the best epic I’ve ever read or seen, although I think it could stand comparison to the ancient epics as well as some newer ones (hey, no one mentions Wagner’s Ring Cycle, probably the grand-daddy of all modern epics? Sure, it’s a looooong series of operas, but they’re some of the coolest operas ever. There’d be no Lord of the Rings without them, I can tell you that!)

Edit: Hey, Starbuccaneer, Pike and other DC area denizens, you guys going to the Capital Fringe Festival? You have to check out “Carnal Node,” mostly because it’s the show put on by my group, Great Noise Ensemble. It’d be great to have some GWC’ers in the audience!

There is hope…
Up until a year ago I was “the music lady” (i.e. teacher) at a preschool. I only came in once a week, so the kids usually would come running and have all kinds of things about thier life to tell me.

So one day this little 4 year old runs up to me and says " Ms. E—! Ms E—! I saw the best movie!" And then he reenacted a lightsaber battle complete with sound effects and told me all about how Darth Maul was bad and then how Obi Wan’s friend had died, and how it made him so sad. That same year for Halloween there were three Darth Vaders and one Princess Leah in the group.

So some parents are doing their jobs.
