Cloverfield

Hwhat is it with the ending? Everyone keeps talking about it. Hwas it really that different?

Let me guess…
Bruce, Arnie, Stallone, or Goldberg with Mac in hand don’t save the day. The monster wins!
Cool - I never saw that spoiler tag before!

It’s not just what you mentioned, but that’s a part of it.

I just saw it today. The one thing I have to say is that the writing and production value exude credibility and realism. The camera motion did give me a headache near the end, so I could have asked for that to be toned down a notch.

Plus it had the hot sarcastic chick from The Class (an immensely underrated sitcom from last year that was canceled).

Saw it last Friday and I must say… WOW!!! I pretty much have to agree with most of the stuff that has already been said… The handheld style of filming, while extremely choppy at times, does so much more to for the suspense than the standard “lets all hid in the dark and jump out at you” that most horror has relied on lately. This seemed like it could have been real… and I felt that all the actors did a great job of emoting the kind of horror one might feel in such a chaotic time like that, whether it was a giant monster or the events of 9/11. I like this style of filming (just as I loved the first Blair Witch) because it is so different from everything else out there… and I’m used to the choppiness, cuz thats how my dad has always filmed things for real

Totally lives up to the hype… go see it! (plus the monster is wicked cool)

… and I’m used to the choppiness, cuz thats how my dad has always filmed things for real

Ha Ha ! Must be a “Dad Thing”…mine always chops everyone’s head off when taking still pics.

Good Movie. Saw it Friday. Did anyone else feel really weird at the end. It just sorta stops, no music, just the credits, I think. I had to turn to my friends and say, “Well?” Of course, the real proof that it was a good movie was the next morning when my wife said she had a nightmare about it.

I thought this was an incredible movie. It punched me in the gut over and over with its hyper-realistic approach. Yes, the camera was choppy, but that in part is what made it work for me. I was there and I believe what was happening.

I don’t understand why people didn’t like the ending. The movie was uncomprimisng. I’ll leave it at that.

I can’t remember the last time I was on the edge of my seat for that long. This movie is to monster movies as BSG is to Science Fiction. Gritty naturalistc in your face realism.

Awesome.

I loved the unique perspective of being behind that camera and experiencing it along with Hud. This one will definately be in my DVD collection when it comes out.

Just saw it today. Had to wait so long due to work to see it. Actually went out Thrusday night and couldn’t find a theater in winston-salem that was playing it at midnight … I drove home pissed. But now that I have seen it I most say I really enjoyed it. For most shows/movies I can be turned off a lot by not having closure but for this movie I feel that it can be assumed what mostly happened after the movie, which I will get to in a moment. Personally I had no problems with the camera work. I felt it added more to the picture then it took away and that it was done that way to make you feel like the interview previously linked that it wasn’t done by a film crew that this was an actual tape found after all of these events had happened. Now for spoiler talk:
I did dislike how everyone died… sue me I like happy endings or at least an ending that doesn’t have every character I have met and enjoyed watching die. Although you could say that Lily didn’t die because she was on the first chopper. But I really felt sad about marlene dying, it really sucked for her. Didn’t care much for Hud(son) because i know the type that would go around spreading stuff at a party and it just put me off about him. I also felt bad for Rob and Beth although you could argue that they might have survived somehow buried under that small bridge, I wouldn’t buy it for a second. I think they died after saying I love you to each other. As far as the monster goes I feel that its obvious that you, the viewer, can assume that by this tape being found and being in government hands that the monster was either killed at the end or moved to a different location but imo I think it was killed. Let’s face it when we wanna kill something I think we have the fire power to do it in this country. So the only thing I would of liked to have learned was what happens to Lily. But I really don’t hold it against the movie because of the way it was filmed.
Although not a masterpiece like everyone else has said I found the movie highly enjoyable and will plan on buying it when its released on dvd and hoping that they will have some special features on there maybe explaining a few unanswered questions at the end.

May I just say…

Lily was just ridiculously hot. All through the movie I was muttering…don’t kill the hot chick…don’t kill the hot chick.
That subway scene had me for a sec…So i was glad she got on the helicopter - I like to think she made it. Everyone else dying, tho a downer, made sense. I liked it.

One problem I did have, after they got on the helicopter and flew off,the army comes in, hit the monster with a bunch of explosives, monster goes down…whyt eh hell didn’t helicopter keep flying away??? “Oh let’s fly in circles and see if we killed it.” I mean damn, get me to safety THEN tell me we killed it. This ain’t no tour! Dumbasses.
I completely agree it was not a masterpiece. And the think anyone who goes in there thinking it will reviatlize a genre will be dissapointed and angry (like some folks I work with who said it was the worst movie they’d ever seen). If you go in wanting to have a good time, see a funky monster and see folks running and screamin’, then you’re all good.

I will say this tho -the viral marketing campaign was amazing to see. I’m in online advertising, so that really jonesed me to see the flick.

Yes, it is relevant.

Saw it last Friday and I loved it. Now I read about this, I’d really like to see one of the last scenes again (and it does explain where the monster is coming from):
"This evening I went to check out Paramount’s CLOVERFIELD once again and while enjoying a seat next to the one covered in vomit (seriously) both Slice and I noticed something interesting in the background of one of the scenes of the film. Highlight the following for the details:

In the FINAL, FINAL scene of the film we see Beth and Rob on a ferris wheel at Coney Island. He pans the camera to his left to shoot the ocean and if you look to the far right of the screen you will see what appears to be the monster falling out of the sky and into the water (see image here). IN AN UPDATE: B-D reader ‘afireinside’ tells us, “JJ stated himself that the monster has been down at the bottom of the ocean for thousands of years. What fell into the ocean at the end of the movie was a satelitte. If you pay attention to the viral marketing, Taragutu’s site states that one of their satelittes fell out of orbit and was lost. This is what woke up the monster from its dormant state.” You be the judge…

In addition, at the end of the credits an audio clip reveals that the monster is not yet dead."

What was much more frightening than the monster itself, was the creatures it spawned.

They run very, very fast. They can crawl on virtually any surface. They can be completely silent. If they bite you, you’re chest explodes within about fifteen minutes.

I’m not sure why, but the fact that these mini-monsters infested most, if not all, of the city within a few hours scared the crap out of me. And the monster bred them by the dozen just by doing a little squat?
Creepy.

Sorry Dan,
Wrap some [ spoiller ] [ /spoiler ] tags around that. (without the spaces)

IMO, Brit. Anyone who willfully enters a thread that’s based on a currently shown movie probably deserves to have it spoiled.

But out of respect, sure, I’ll tag it this time.

Well, it’s easy to click through if you’re coming through the ‘new posts’ link and not paying close attention. Sure, you should have been, but it’s still nice to spoiler-tag.

looks like it’s probably a go…

the only thing I am worried about with a sequel is if its not good it will ruin the greatness of the first movie.

I finally went to see this Sat night…and I thought it was very well done. It was really a character driven movie, imho, and did a fine job of making us invest in the characters. The creature was weird and mysterious and, well, weird! The devastation was well portrayed, and the military was there in force (and even a bit of humanity thrown in, surprise surprise !!)…
In the first couple of minutes I thought that the handheld camera gimmick was going to get to me, but after I adjusted to it (quickly), I actually dug it, and it made the whole journey scarier and a more personally felt experience. I’m not saying I’d like to watch every movie in this style, but it didn’t drive me nuts like I thought it was going to, either.
Money well spent, a very good movie experience, and I hope the sequel can live up to the level of unease and tension that this one did !!

And without giving anything away…If you haven’t seen it yet, sit through the credits.

Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead. But, I thought it better than making a new one.

Of the people who didn’t like the movie, or didn’t like the end, what was their issue? The lack of a happy ending? Or, just the camera movement?

I saw this last year and just watched it again. While it’s not the best movie ever, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
