i have only seen the tv spots, but based on the clues, i can already tell what its about… AND IM SEEING IT!!!
I bought my tickets for the midnight showing today! I’m really excited even if I was a little spoiled on what the monster looks like.
I saw a preview last night in Seattle and will only support what is said above. It’s very original and very focused.
The monster is - well, a monster - and not the point of the story. You do get several really good shots of it at the end, including a full-face view, but ultimately that’s not what the movie is about.
The story is how the characters are forced to survive when bigger than life events cause tragedy. The acting & script are exactly where they need to be, and the effects serve the story and are seamlessly done.
Cloverfield is a very refreshing take on a stale genre.
aw man, that was great!
Anyone else thinking that, just as Godzilla was a reaction to Hiroshima, Cloverfield could be a (possibly intentional, clever JJ) reaction to 9/11?
I am been waiting for this movie since last year when I saw the untitled trailer in the theatres and have fully bought the hype. Seeing it tomorrow.
The tricky thing in these movies is when they make the reveal of the “monster” things generally take a nosedive - hope they’ve managed a way to make it all work out!
I just got back from the midnight showing - incredible. It lives up to the hype.
I loved the ending and the fact that in many ways it doesn’t play by the typical hollywood rules.
Let me guess. It’s the black cloud from the ‘Lost’ island.
Thanks Pike.
People I’ve been talking to thought I was probably overthinking and giving JJ too much credit.
…amateurs.
Definitely - a co worker of mine saw it last night and that was all she kept saying was that there was a 9/11 vibe in it. However, she did complain about all teh camera movements - so if you get motion sick easy…just take that into account.
I’m seeing it tomorrow morning
Just saw it. It was good, but not a masterpiece. I actually wish they had shown less of the monster, or at least shown it later in the movie than they did. I give it great credit for giving the monster movie genre a new perspective, though I don’t think you’re going to be seeing a whole lot of films shot in the same way any time soon.
It seemed most people in the theater I was in were very disappointed by the ending, but I don’t really know why if they had been paying attention to the very beginning.
But overall I wasn’t disappointed at all. It just didn’t overly exceed my expectations (which may have been high to begin with). But I think most people on this forum will highly enjoy it.
Cloverfield was great! It was especially eerie that my real-life office was directly in the path of destruction.
Previous to 9/11, large-scale disasters seemed unimaginable, but in this new era we can actually conceivable.
The movie took itself seriously, like “what if this really happened, how would it go down?”, no mathew-broderickish godzilla fluff.
A quick aside, sorry…
Stevie, your website “Dreamwick” is very cool. I especially like the Swiss Army Knife button !
Back to Cloverfield…haven’t seen it yet but will be this week, and I can’t wait. I’ve been watching the previews for months (as we all have) and my interest is definately piqued…
I just saw it last night. I liked it, especially the ending. Most people were pissewd b/c of the ending. I was sitting in the 5th row and I got a little sick from the camera angles at one point.
I just saw it.
Start: Good
Middle: Great
End: Meh
I really didn’t get it, if someone could explain it that would be great. I was just left feeling like, “Well, that was…different…”
Thanks Topgun, btw =)
I heard some boos from the crowd at the end of the show.
It isn’t traditional and familiar in the familiar Hollywood yarn sense, but I think the abrupt twists, turns and ultimately jarring ending underline how something like this might go down if it ever really did. Many of the people affected wouldn’t have a neatly tied up narrative if this happened in real life - so I actually appreciated that.
I liked it - was it a masterpiece - not really. But it does make you wonder why it took so long ot make a monster movie like this. To me there was definitely an underlying 9/11 vibe to it.
I actually liked the ending as well. Maybe it’s just me…
No masterpiece, agreed, but a great way to spend 1.5 hours of your entertainment time. Worth the bucks.
