Me and my friend played Spec Ops untill his 360 overheated. Excellent game. Not game of the year (I dont play online), but I’ll probably buy it eventually.
I noticed that happened to me too, I had to step away a few times…
It’s a freaking rush though.
The funny thing is that the controversial scene in the airport actually turned me off to the game for a while. I put it down and came back to it two days later to continue the missions. As the events unfold, specifically
the invasion of America
I realize that the airport scene was necessarily horrible and intense otherwise
invading America would not make any sense whatever reason they gave you would come off as cheap.
Seriously, think about it. I am sure they did, how do you set up a story in which America is invaded? Having an American involved with the massacre works, but unless you the player experience it first hand it would still not ring true. Imagine the game tells you, “There was a massacre in Russia! There was an American involved! Russians are invading the US!” you would roll your eyes and think, “Whatever.”
This is the long of explaining that I realize the airport scene wasn’t a cheap throwaway “let’s see if we can shock people” event. It was necessary to the narrative and purposely horrible in order to invoke the very real reaction that Russia makes.
Thots?
Solai, I agree about that airport scene that it does help the set up for sure. It was pretty intense though, to say the least! I just observed though, didn’t fire a shot of my own. When they give you the choice of whether to play it or not, I debated, but the curious gamer part won!
I played the single player for a couple hours last night and holy crap, does that tense you up! I finally stopped and had to do a little upper body stretching before I went to bed! HA! Good stuff though!
MW2 is a sequel in the most stereotypical sense - it’s bigger and badder and more insane for no apparent reason other than it had to top its predecessor. It had some better highs than CoD4, but is a lot more inconsistent and wacky. I felt kind of cheated in the end, actually. :\
But it’s not like anyone really cares about single player because the multiplayer is why they made it. And the multi is really, really good. I like how much they reward you for stuff over CoD4 - I made it to level 12 in just over 2 hours.
Can we get a move back to online gaming clan?
With that said, when is a good time for everyone to get together and play? How’s tomorrow night?
In general terms my window is small, but as always if you see me on drop me a line. I just finished the campaign and am now working on special ops and multiplayer so I am up for anything.
Campaign review -> Oh my frakking gods that was incredible. Bloody (no pun intended) brilliant.
I’m generally good most nights after 9-9:30pm, Mountain Time. Sadly I haven’t gotten much time this week for multi player, so I’ve only hit level 3 or 4 so far. I’m about half way on the campaign too. I did however get a chance to play split screen co-op in Spec Ops with my brother in law tonight when they were over for dinner! Some really fun stuff! Love the missions with the airship!
So I picked it up this past Tuesday, finished the campaign last night. I must admit, the graphics and firearms are sexy. The scope of battlefields and storyline is much wider and intense.
That being said, there were a few things that bugged me. Spoiler-tagged below.
-
The airport scene. Masses of innocent civilians get slaughtered in an international airport in Moscow, a powerful and traumatic scene to say the least. So Makarov kills you at the end and the Russian police reinforcements arrive and realize that one of the gunman (you) is found to be an American. Wait, what? First off, Allen is undercover, he’s not carrying a CIA ID on him. How are they so damn sure that Allen is working under the auspices of the Americans? But let’s assume the Russian FSB was that good for the moment. So they ID your corpse as an American. Somehow that instantly equals “America is terrorizing Russia! Invade them!”? I understand the regime in Russian isn’t the same as it was in MW1, but surely there must be SOME intelligent frakkers in Russia who’re saying “one dead American among the gunmen doesn’t instantly equal terrorism by the American government.” Also, this is a major international airport. Surely they must have security cameras all over that damn building that can ID Makarov among the raiding party and show that this whole slaughter wasn’t carried out by one “rogue American.” Shepherd was right about one thing: Americans prefer precision and avoid killing civilians.
-
How did Makarov know Allen was a spy? What was the tipoff?
-
Why the hell did Captain Price launch the nuke at Washington, D.C.? The only thing I can surmise is that he knew the American military was getting its ass kicked near D.C. from the superior Russian air power, and decided to use the EMP effect from the nuke exploding far overhead to level the playing field, but that seems like a bit of a stretch. How could he really have known how bad things were in D.C.? To be honest, after he launched the missile, I seriously thought he’d snapped from his time in the Gulag and Shepherd was right all along about his instability. Also worth noting, the ISS sits at an altitude range between 184-191 nautical miles above the earth’s surface. When the nuke detonated, the ISS was not even directly above the eastern seaboard, which means it was MORE than 191 NM away from the detonation. How in the hell does a shockwave reach the ISS from that distance? Better yet, what matter is the shockwave pushing into the ISS that makes it break apart? There’s virtually no atmosphere at that height in orbit.
-
How in the hell does Captain Price manage to take down a Pave Low helicopter with several strategically placed shots from a machine gun, shooting from a position that is by no means static?
-
What the hell was General Shepherd’s goal? I get the fact he was pissed off that so many of his men were killed when the nuke went off in the middle east during MW1. I also get the fact that he created Task Force 141 to “get the job done”. But why kill Roach and Ghost then? They wanted the same thing Shepherd did, to kill Makarov and expose his involvement in the airport massacre, which would in theory end the war with Russia and send everyone home. So why kill guys under your command who have the same goals as you? It’s not like TF-141 could go public with the data they collected from Makarov’s servers. They’re black ops, they pass it on to Shepherd, he takes it public, and Makarov’s frakked. End of story.

With the nature of the world in this game with issues like terrorism and the like, I find it very unlikely that the US military doesn’t have more than one satellite system scanning the skies watching for foreign intrusion. So what if the Russian ultra-nationalists hacked one downed satellite? Surely other early warning systems are mutually exclusive from the compromised one and still functioning. What’s more, if someone reports they have a ton of blips on their radar, but someone else says they don’t, doesn’t it warrant further investigation rather than simply saying “nice try, that joke won’t work on me?” Maybe instead a better response would be “hey, let’s warm up the planes and weapons; it might be nothing, but let’s be ready just in case.”
-
Who the hell is Raptor? And who was the “high value asset” in the subdivision in Virginia?
-
How in the hell did the Russians mobilize an invasion force so quickly? What’s more, in order to reach the eastern seaboard the way it displayed in the cutscene, the Russians would’ve had to pass over Europe. None of the EU allies thought to give the US a call and say “Hey, there’s a ton of craaaap headed your way?”
Okay, that admittedly was more of a rant. I haven’t tried SpecOps or the multiplayer yet. I’m hoping to give it a go later tonight.
<_< No offense Solar but you might want to play through it again. Most of what you find faulty has answers.
1 and 2. Makarov and Shep were working together from the start. Zakheav, the bad guy from the first game, almost nuked the US and his peeps are in charge now. The Russians WANT war. The Airport Op was a setup to to show cause for that war. The reason nobody in Russia was asking questions like “Oh one rogue american” was because of that, annd why nobody was like “It’s not the US Government!” was because Shep told them he was CIA and gave them evidence.
-
It’s cool and I thought he lost it too. I guess what he was trying to do was give everyone a cool off period so it wouldn’t escalate even further to the point of an ever larger war.
-
He shot it down with his M203, not his M4
-
He wanted control of the US military and for everyone in the US to love them and want to be them. Like right after 9/11. What I don’t get is how a US Army Ranger can call 30,000 Marines his men. The data on the modem, shows that Makarov and Shep were connected, it’s not just about getting Makarov.
-
Plot calls for it
-
Raptor is somebody in the chain of succession, I’m thinking vice pres. As for the high value asset in VA? Iunno. Somebody else in the US Government.
-
See 1 and 2. Russians set the ENTIRE thing up. The whole thing. From A to Z with the help of Shep. They were ready to invade. As for the travel path, well. Plot calls for it. And I think, think if they flew over the arctic and then split the difference between like Finland and Iceland and flew low enough they might sneak by. But I’m not an expert.
Well, I finally finished the single player yesterday. Think I logged about 9 hours of play time, a bit longer than the average I’ve heard. Oh well, I had fun!
So, I’ve moved on to the on-line multi player a bit more. I didn’t play the on-line part of the first MW all that much as I felt a bit intimidated, and never really had the time to put into it to learn and to practice. Well, I’m hoping to change that on this one! My brother in law came over yesterday to help me learn a bit about all the classes, perks, challenges etc. Really helped a lot in my understanding of how it all works.
I ended up playing for WAY too long last night. I was lucky and got into a group of folks who were cool to hang with, not all the trash talk crap you oft times get. I ended up having the most fun I’ve ever had playing on-line in a game! Totally got me hooked. I hung in pretty good with a lot of level 20-30 and higher guys, when I’m only level 11.
Anyway, let’s get some GWC games going! I imagine I’ll be on most every evening over the long weekend, so look me up if you want to play! I’m up for the Spec Ops too!
For 6 I think you could chalk it up to people getting lazy and not doing their jobs, and the plot called for it too.
Price made a comment about how the world looked more like hell then the one he just left so I’m pretty sure he was told by Soap and the others what was going on.
As for how they sliped by, they copyed the ACS which I guess allowed them to deflect our radar’s somewhat.
All in all I loved this game. It made more logical sense then I think a game has too and for that I give them credit. And for whatever little holes people will poke in it’s story I say “I really just don’t care.”
I’m not a huge gamer mainly becasue games bore me easily but Modern Warfare 2 kept my ass glued to the chair.
I haven’t even touched the Spec Op’s yet, family and real life has kept me away. Stupid work, god friday was crapy…
Anyway, that’s my thot’s.
Does anyone know the trick to getting on the roof of the southern building on Highrise.
Just of to the left side of the building as u face it, there is a skiff hanging from one end, run and jump off the edge towards that skiff and if u hit it right u should be able to climb it like a ladder (the jump is really tricky might take u a few times to make it), then once on top of the skiff walk along the ledge across the building (this is ledge is also very unforgiving so easy around the corners), once across the ledge there will be a slightly angled skiff, jump on to it, walk up it, jump on to the edge of the roof in front of the fence, walk along the edge until u get to the wide flat bit of the roof and your done.
But pick when to get up there, while walking along the ledge it is incredibly easy to spot and kill you.
Thanks. Is there a particular spot you have to jump from?
Like Jeff112 said, it’s a tricky jump. Took me a good number of tries before I finally got it!
This video shows it pretty well though: http://www.xfire.com/video/1930a2/
Look for me on Live, and I’ll show you a couple more cool spots. Gamertag is Doerzer.
Has anybody else finished all the Special Ops? Jeez, those last few were insane! My buddy and I took forever to finsish off the last of the juggers–on one star!
The video helped alot…finally was able to do it in a private session. Now I have to try it in an actually game.
A buddy of mine got up on that roof right and had a 22 ks going trying to get a nuke.
So the enemy is hanging out in the building below him. When suddenly. WHAM A FRAKKIN CAREPACKAGE FALLS ON HIS HEAD
DOH! That would be a serious bummer, but kinda funny to see! :D;)
