Buckaroo Banzai Re-Watch

Just watched the movie for the first time. Wow.

Perfect Tommy really reminded me of Jared Leto’s character in Fight Club. Not just the hair, but the whole subtle ego & “perfectness.”

The effects were pretty decent, too. Although, I’m pretty sure that the “eighth dimension” was, in fact, actually footage of hairs under really high mag…goes off to check for aliens in his scalp

John Lithgow is pure entertainment. Seriously. For those who haven’t seen it, check out the TV series “Third Rock from the Sun” for more of him as an eccentric alien

Lastly, GREATEST SIGN EVER:

Nobudy Cumz In Here

I don’t remember if hairs entered into it, but that was an early version of using electron microscope images.

I just watched it this weekend with my 12-year-old son. He seemed confused, but generally enjoyed the experience. I kept picking up on weird queues, like the watermelon.

I got it from the on-line blockbuster service with no delays (and yes, I’ll be returning it immediately).

Much fun; thanks for reminding me of this treasure.

Sean and Audra, make sure Chuck is sitting down before he reads this.

What is Buckaroo Banzai?

Thanks for the IMDB link. This looks weird but I’m game. Time to fix the Netflix Q.

I had taken some time away from the GWC to get some work done. Only to be take aback when I looked at the show notes on my Ipod for the latest podcast. One of my favorite podcasts doing a rewatch of a movie that I still put in my Top 10 of all time movies. I am proud to say that I am old enough to be one of the few to see this movie in the theater and still remember it with fondness to this day. This movie started a cult with me and all my closest friends. We would constantly quote the movie much to the confusion of those around us. It remains to this day, the only movie that I can quote more lines than “The Princess Bride” and the one that reminds me of how much a geek I was in High School. One of the opening lines of the movie “thus began life as he was destined to live it… going in several directions at once” was definitely something I felt described me at the time.

Just a few notes and I’ll let you guys get on your way…

Classic quotes you can use with your friends:

  1. No No No NO Don’t tug on that. You never know what it might be attached to.
  2. Parking brake - set, and press checked. (inside the HB88 before the mission)
  3. Lithium is no longer available on credit. ( while Lizardo is scribbling on the wall in prison)
  4. Laugh-a while you can, monkey-boy!
  5. … but that’s all over now, and she’s gone, and that’s
about all there is for me to say about that… (pre Forest Gump)
  6. All I’m trying to say is I’m barely holding my… fudge, right now.
  7. Where we going… Planet Ten!.. When… Real Soon!
  8. There are monkeyboys in the facility!
  9. It’s not my goddamn PLANET, understand, MONKEYBOY

AND OF COURSE THE CLASSIC!
Don’t be mean. We don’t have to be mean.
'Cause, remember, no matter where you go… there you are.

First off, welcome back! I’ve always enjoyed BB, but after the recent re-watch(es) – we’ve watched it twice now around the GWC lair – I’ve come to enjoy it even more. I picked up the novelization (on someone’s recommendation here, and I’m embarrassed that I forget whose) and though I’m not a big fan of the writing style, I feel like the book has finally filled in a lot of the story gaps from the film.

The movie’s fun enough as a comic romp, but it’s actually based on an incredibly cool story that I believe could totally stand a re-imagining into a slightly more serious movie. (Think serious on the same level of the recent Transformers movie: keep the camp, but add a serious tone, too.)

I have to get some work done, too, so I can’t hit all the detail I want to, but I’m totally going to expound on the concepts from the book when I get a chance.

BTW: I also scored the two-book comic series published at the time of the theatrical release. I haven’t had a chance to get through 'em yet, but I will this weekend.

But still, I can’t help but note that I’m still a Buckaroo Banzai fan primarily because I just love the concept.

Chuck, you are so right with that. I loved BB and felt like, even though they didn’t show it, there was so much more story to this movie you could just feel it beneath the surface. I would love it if they’d make another movie or series out of it.

I don’t think there is Buckaroo Banzai- or at least I can’t found it. If any other Brits have found it, please tell me. It sounds cool.

It’s out there, I saw it going at a boot fair last weekend.

You can probably pick up a copy on Ebay.

In fact if you check within the next day or so:

Just a quick bump sure to please Chuck…BB is now available on Netflix’s Instant Watch ! Monkey Boy.
