I’ll ask another question to try and get deeper PhilosopherJed.
Trust and respect must go hand in hand. Has Gaeta lost respect for Adama, for Roslin? Certainly the lack of ‘Sirs’ and Tigh continually lording that on Gaeta time and again can’t help but is it a sign of him having lost respect? Respecting a decision and doing nothing thereby showing trust and stopping and saying I can’t trust you on this one and my respect for you won’t change my position, or my motivation for a course of action.

Excellent point, which raises the classic “chicken and egg” question: Does respect follow upon trust, or does respect merit trust? Or are they intertwined in some sort of “feedback loop”?

The easy answer would be “entwined”, because things in life are rarely exactly cause-and-effect.

I think respect has to come first, though. Using early Season 2 as an example… Athena saves Kara’s life on Old Caprica; Kara trusts her, because she respects that she risked her life for Kara. It doesn’t have to be any deeper respect than that. Likewise Kara trusts Helo’s judgment once she’s established that he’s still him and worthy of her respect because of their friendship.

Do we ever get any examples of purely blind trust?
