His wife was dying of (or already had died) of cancer. I don’t know the exact timing, but he has told the story several times about how he didn’t really tell anyone one the series and everytime he turned around someone was dying in his arms on the show. He was referring to either the filming of these or the first couple of episodes of next season.
Good thing you flew those medical scanners into the sun. Those sure wouldn’t have been useful in the last 150,000 years.
