It’s actually kind of funny how it works. Cigarette smoke numbs the lungs, preventing the expulsion of tar. Not smoking for a long time (for instance, when you’re sleeping) causes them to “wake up” and start cleaning the crud out, which causes coughing, discomfort, and occasionally pain. Smoking upon waking calms that response down again. Ironically, trying to make themselves feel better causes more damage in the long run…
