TNG and DS9 are similar in that they get most of their crappiness out of the way in the first 2 seasons. DS9 gets really interesting once when… how to phrase it without spoilers?? you’ll know it when you see it. The DS9 arc is incredible at times, but there are a lot of stand alone episodes that are very good. Plus you have Garak, easily one of my top 5 Trek charachters
“The Search 1+2” ?
Plus you have Garak, easily one of my top 5 Trek charachters
Garak’s awesome. And so is Vic. Greatest holographic dude ever devised!
I strongly disagree, The Doctor from Voyager is the best thing about that show, he’s funny, charming and surpraising in his depth of character (for a hologram). He would get my holographic dude vote.
hm… you’re making a good argument… good old Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy… and he even sings at least as good as Vic…
Vic was more fun, though. I’m thinking of when they robbed his casino… plus, he helped Nog through a rough patch…
I think for DS9 you really need to watch the entire series…I agree there are some weak episodes early on but alot of important character development and backstory happens in the first two seasons, especially for Kira. I think knowing this stuff helps you understand decisions the characters make later in the series. I enjoy learning about the characters as they evolve into the series as it gets darker.
I voted TNG. I was also a twentysomething when TNG debuted. I was skeptical since I had grown up loving TOS, making audiocassettes–yes, children, you read that correctly–of my favorite episodes.
TNG came along and after a couple of disappointing first steps, they had me hooked. The post-borgnapping summer was the most distressed I’ve ever been by a cliffhanger, with the possible exception of the three years we waited to get Han Solo out of that damned carbonite.
I will watch any trek that comes along, but the only series I own is TNG. I loved DS9, liked Voyager, and really hoped Enterprise would get better (which it actually did near the end).
mostly because my favorite character is quark from all star trek so its DS9 for me cause Ferengie (sp?) are pretty damn cool
Lady D, I totally agree with that whole statement. Except I own all the series.
I didn’t know what to expect when posting this thread. Recently I wrote Chuck and expressed about what drew my attention to GWC. It was the non-bash attitude. If you visit other boards, you’ll find so many negative posts. This sux. That sux. Dissing actors, plotlines, etc. Focus on the negative. This community is the exact opposite. It is always so positive or at the very least intelligent with it’s criticism. It is an absolute joy to be a part of this community.
Don’t worry. TOS was my first love. It will always have a special piece of my heart. Shatner’s over-the-top acting is part of the appeal. Growing up, I was totally enamored by Captain Kirk. I wanted to be him when I grew up. I even wrote a paper about it. Man, I wish I still had that. The friendship between Bones, Spock, and Jim, I wanted that. Who wouldn’t?
Ah, so you’re the other one.
Yeah, the beauty of TOS is that it was brave and new. Kirk could be an irrational headstrong guy, because he was on the edge of known space, and as long as he performed, he was good. (I’d love to see the reports to Command. Encountered and defeated Roman god. Continuing patrol.)
Later Trek (TNG especially) seems like a contraction, despite their best efforts. The ship is ridiculously family-friendly (sorry Wil, not your fault.)
DS9 was actually an interesting direction, but I had lost interest when it was on. I’ve been intrigued by the repeats I catch, though.
Enterprise was a family moment for the GF and I, until we realized they were just fscking with continuity and it just didn’t matter ('bout the end of season one, IIRC.) I hear the last season wasn’t bad. Aside from the last episode, I wouldn’t know.
The new movie is a chance to do Enterprise right, but I really doubt that they will. I think only a fanfilm could do that (and they’d have a hard time of it.)
TNG is a really close second.
Gotta love the Whorf man…

What a choice!!! My first and final instinct was to go with Voyager - really the first total Star Trek experience I had uninterrupted. I was there when they got stranded…and every week I was there until they made it back. While some of the characters were a little cheesy and 2D, there were also a lot of moments of depth and growth (Tuvoc comes to mind, as does Tess, and Janeway herself) and some really great moments in SciFi writing - end of ? season when they were kidnapped and living a life in some factory-type place stand out, and others.
And, let me just address the whole eye-candy thing - EVERY series had it’s eye candy - Ohura and her miniskirts, the Counselor Troy on TNG, Kira Niris on DS9, 7O9 on Voyager, and everyone’s favorite - T’pol on Enterprise - and, I might add, in every situation but Ohura’s, these women all had special outfits/uniforms designed for them to a) make them more at ease in a new alien environment or b) conform Starfleets standards to thier own cultural standards to “make them more comfortable”…(even though this is never done for anyone but really hot wommen), and the uniforms just happen to be tight. Correct me if I’m wrong here - I could be off with Kira…
I love TNG movies - First Contact being my favorite of all time (“the line is drawn her-ah!!”)- but with Voyager, well, I was just rooting for them the whole time, they had everything including time against them, and they still kept going, learning more as they went along. Like many others have said, I guess I just didn’t stick around long enough on DS9 - call me shallow but Odo really got on my nerves, and I had a hard time with the whole Ferengi thing - loved the characters, but how their money economy fit in with the money-less culture.
Enterprise - call me crazy, but I think Dr. Flocks (sp?) just made that show -he always seemed like the only one who was comfortably on the ship out in space, and rightly so - his character (besides T’pol) was the only one who had actually ventured out in space. And yes, Reed was awesome. I wish there would have been more hooking up on the show, beyond the aborted T’pol/Tucker storyline that went nowhere. I have to agree with an earlier poster that the paralell earth cliffhanger bit was a little over the top (shark?) going into Season 4. The show just seemed to drift after they saved earth from that thingamijig. What I loved about the show - the times when they visit cultures that are less developed - an interesting view of alien visitations from a new perspective.
Having said all of that, I would have to say the greatest ST Character of all time, for me at least, would have to be Spock - the man embodied a way of being, and philosophy, and contained a character that was timeless, powerful, and recognizable the world over…
Hell, yeah. Bring it on! It’s been too long without Trek!
Well, I do think so, too, that would of course be ideal, but i thought the question was where to start if you didn’t want to watch the whole series.
hihi, I’m reminded of an RDM podcast, the one where he says that in the early days of internet forums, people used to totally diss DS9, like taking it apart by the minute and going this bit here at 6:07 and then this at 6:59 and so on and they would be like “I’ve watched the episode five or six times and it STILL sucks!” and RDM with a smile just said that that was just another expression of their love for the show and if they really didn’t care, they wouldn’t watch each episode over and over again…
what?
Jadzia was way eye-candier than Kira! WAY!
“do the spots go … all the way down?”
Best line ever: “I am NOT a merry man!”
I’m talking uniforms here - uniforms especially made to be painted on said hottie - backed up by plot. But, yes, Jadzia was/is definitely hot…
I don’t believe it. I just realized that I left the Animated Series out. Where is that damn wet noodle? Saturday mornings in front of the ol’ black-and-white with teh tin-foiled rabbit ears.
Oh forgive me sci-fi gods! I’ll make an offering. I’ll sell my old Fangoria mags on ebay and give the proceeds to charity. One that looks nice. And not too expensive. Noowww…GO!
…plus the Animal House bit with Wharf smashing Geordi’s mandolin. When he grabbed it and smashed it, I thought, “Gee, just like Animal House!” And when he followed up with “Sorry,” that was definitely in the top-five hardest times I’ve laughed at a TV moment.
are you kidding? Doc’s “O Soave Fanciulla” or his Pon Farr improv of “La Donna e mobile”:
“Tuvok I understand
You are a Vulcan man
…
You have gone without
For seven years–about”
(all I can remember at the moment, but absolutely hysterical)
Definitely one of the best Voyager characters and my favorite hologram
wow. good memory!
btw, I like your signature. I saw the movie with Keanu Reeves and Denzel Washington the day before yesterday.
another reason why Id have the doc as the best holographic person is that he has the best “I’m a doctor, not a …” line in all of the series (IMO)
“I’m a doctor, not a counter-insurgent,” - Emergency Hologram Doctor, Basics part II, Voyager
