I wasn’t sure if I should make a new thread, but I thought this might be relevant to a Batman thread. Has anyone seen Gotham Knights yet? It’s an anime STV that ties into the new movie. I just acquired the vid. and was wondering what others think about it.
I’ve only seen the trailer looks pretty impresive to me.
I just finished watching the vid.
All I can is WOW. The early episodes are interesting, but from the Scarecrow/Killer Croc episode on the rest is just brilliant. Do yourself a favor and download this as soon as possible and then go out and buy the DVD.
Yeah I’m anxiously awaiting the DVDs, too. They’ll come out this month from what I know, so I think I’m going to wait for them.
And thanks for not making a new thread, I think we’re all fine discussing the movies in here, right?
Sorry you didn’t dig it… The story IS a pretty standard parallel-earth thing, with some noir mixed in. But what’d you think of the Batman/Commissioner Wayne/Owl Man bits?
That was weird! And I have to say, I didn’t get it. Or at least I think I didn’t get it.
Bruce Wayne’s parents didn’t die, only his mother? And his father, Thomas Wayne, went on to become Commissioner Wayne and Bruce became Owl Man? Or was there another brother?
I didn’t get it at first either. Even at his best, Morrison has coherency issues.
On Earth 2, when the Waynes were robbed, Mama Wayne and Bruce were killed.
Papa Thomas Wayne lived and became the Commissionner.
A SECOND Wayne brother lives; he blames Father Wayne for his brother and mother’s death, and becomes super villain Owl Man.
So my favorite moment from the book is the face-to-face meeting of Bruce Wayne and his father, Thomas.
In all honesty, I would prefer if they just left Robin out of the movies. Personally, I just never cared for the character, and I am not sure he would fit in with the feel of the new movies, though I guess it could be done.
Oh, I get it now. But:
Thomas Wayne is a doctor, how is the mirror image of a doctor a police commissioner?
If Wayne has a brother, how does that work? The brother must have been born already when the mother got shot! Or is it a half brother?
Oh yeah, when Batman meets his dad, that is certainly a powerful moment. Although there was so much happening, I didn’t quite the full impact out of it. It didn’t feel like the quiet moment it should be. Like, when in “When In Rome”, Catwoman at the end of the book is standing at the grave of her supposed father, The Roman mafia guy who got killed in The Long Halloween (I think?). That kind of moment.
What I think would have benefitted the book would have been if they had explored more of the moral issues. I mean, that Brainiac character when he says that there’s good and there’s evil and he’s beyond such things, what does that mean, how does that work.
I wouldn’t be above giving a movie with Robin a chance, but as I agreed before, it’d be really hard to pull that off convincingly and without an abundance of campiness. If they do a story like when Robin gets orphaned (whichever Robin that might be) or when Jason Todd gets killed, that could work. Even though of course Todd gets killed by the Joker and I doubt they’re gonna re-cast another actor for that role, that wouldn’t be fair to the memory of Ledger.
I think they could pull a movie off with Dick Grayson’s Robin.
That was the first Robin, right? Well, he doesn’t have to be Robin, he could be Nightwing already?
Yes that is the 1st Robin. I’m not sure they could jump right into Nightwing. I guess they could, but I think the classic Robin orgin story would be the way to go. I think something based on Frank Miller’s retelling of the Robin origin in All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder would fit in great with the new series if they do any more movies after the third.
From what I hear that is an awful series?
I like it. People don’t like that Batman is really mean to Robin and that Batman is kind of loopy at times. I’ve only read a handful of the series, but I find the relationship between Batman and Robin interesting. It’s a far cry from the Ol’chum days.
It’s more a parallel universe than an exact mirror universe. The way I read the brother situation, I think in that universe, Mr. and Mrs Wayne had two kids, maybe twins?
And, not to bag on Mr. Morrison, but issues like that are reasons why he’s always going to be on the B-list of Major Comic Talents, and never quite in a league with Moore and Miller.
I read the first three issues, and yes, it was, pretty bad.
Yeah I can’t really judge it first-handedly, but Wiki says some critics say he’s writing a Sin City story in the Batverse, depicting Batman as enjoyed the pain-inflicting.
You know, I think the hallmark that sets a great writer apart from a good writer as that he is able to let things go instead of coming back to the same old themes time and again. When you think about Moore’s works, Ronin, Watchmen, Vendetta, always something different, whereas Miller is always about Sin City, it would seem.
I just added it to my Netflix queue. Here’s the link for anyone who’s interested.
You’re thinking of Batman Beyond. Bruce Wayne was a crusty old man, the Batsuit was cybernetically enhanced, the Joker inspired a cultish street gang of thugs, etc. It was very sci-fi in general, as well.
I’m reminded of what Batman said in TDKR about developing artificial kryptonite, something along the lines of “It took a lot of time and money. Fortunately I had both.” If he can recreate radioactive alien space rocks, what’s a little thing like immortality?
The Lazarus Pits could be another option, I suppose.
I enjoyed Red Rain. I see that it had two sequels as well. I’ll have to check them out. The trilogy has been collected into a trade paperpack, FYI.
Very good point.
I just gave it a scan… on JLA: Earth 2: page 38, the Commissioner Wayne has a picture on his desk of his family. It’s mom, dad, and two kids. The bottom-left corner with the second kid is ripped away.
Oh yeah, I’m really excited about this. Comes out on July 18th, right?

If I had a lot of time and money, I’d hire that Greystone dude to make to me a Six.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Thalia in a future Batmovie. Liv Tyler should be perfect for that role.

Red Rain’s the one where Superman lands in the USSR?
I should pay more attention to details.
