I’m sure that the people that missed season 1 of Buffy were thinking - “Who’s Darla?”
I know Joss was forshadowing Dawn on Buffy, but I think that’s stretching the concept a little. 
First time through, I didn’t remember exactly who Darla was, so I went through the whole summer being very confused about the season finale. Thankfully, we have Google now.

I actually think they added her name in post-production, because it’s spoken offscreen. They probably figured out that no one would recognize Julie Benz after all that time.

I didn’t recognize her even with the name. It took the first episodes when she had real cloths on before I realized who she was. What will be nice for the next season are the Spike/Drusilla/Darla/Angel crossovers.
