About GWC's Firefly Re-Watch

When I heard on the podcast that a Firefly rewatch was in the works I punched both fists in the air and threw a pair of horns. Unfortunately I was at work at the time…
…\m/

Adam Baldwin – Firefly’s Jayne Cobb; no relation to the other Baldwins – rules. I was going to say I wish the guy worked more, but I checked it out, and he works a lot; just not in high-profile stuff. Interestingly, he does a lot of superhero cartoon voice work. And he’s in Halo 3.

And Kubrick used him in Full Metal Jacket, which has gotta count for something. And I think it takes a rare kind of gumption to commit to an ugly role like Animal Mother.

For me, with all respect to Baldwin’s later work, his first role may have been his best, as the title character in 1980’s “My Bodyguard.” It’s one of the great, semi-lost 80s flicks. It kinda presaged the whole teen-movie wave. It also features Chris Makepeace – Meatballs’ Rudy the Rabbit – as the kid who hires Baldwin to protect him from a bully, played comically but seriously and well by Matt Dillon. For my money, it’s one of the best-acted teen-star flicks.

And Mr. Makepeace, that guy just disappeared, sadly. http://imdb.com/name/nm0538485/

Last night my son and I watched the last Firefly episode and then Serenity back-to-back… Over the last few weeks I’ve been reminded, and he’s been introduced to just how funny and powerful the writing is. This is one of the all time great TV series, and we told my wife that she’s gonna be forced to join us in two years, when we pull the disks out again…

— Dismal on a two year Firefly cycle

Whoever posted the note about the $17.99 special at Target, you broke my resolve, and I caved, and bought the DVDs. I watched the show as it aired, and I have a fairly decent memory for that kind of thing… But as the GWC Crew have been discussing the shows, I can’t believe how much nuance I missed – or was lost – when Fox aired the shows, without the pilot, and at odd times, and missing episodes, etc.

you guys talking about Firefly made me bust out my dvds and watch them all this past weekend… I’d forgotten how amazing this show was, and now I’m feeling the loss of it all over again. :frowning:

I’m currently experiencing Firefly for the first time and I find myself intrigued by this show to the utmost degree.

Ahm… at which point in the rewatch are we right now? I was looking for a thread for the episode The Message and the last two episodes and I couldn’t find any - what might I be missing here?

GR, you haven’t missed anything. I am sure that due to Chuck’s excitement about tomorrow it has slipped his mind to make the new threads. Shoot him a PM, I am sure he will take care of it quickly.

See? It isn’t too Western-y, IS it?

Welcome to the Browncoats.

No, it isn’t. I just finished watching Objects in Space and yeah, I’ve already seen the movie.
Feeling empty now. “That ain’t a shepherd” - I wanna know more about that. And I guess I wanna see more Firefly. And I think I shed a tiny little tear. And I feel the need to rant a little:

Although Whedon had designed the show to run for seven years,[67] and the show had a loyal following during its original broadcast,[68] low ratings resulted in cancellation by FOX in December 2002 after only eleven episodes had aired in the United States and Canada.[69]
7 years? We coulda had SEVEN FRAKKING YEARS OF THIS COOL STUFF? I don’t know if they could have maintained that level of quality over such a long period of time, but three seasons would have been a nice round number.

Low ratings? Hasn’t anyone realized yet that the Nielsen system is completely outdated? Oh yeah and incidentally and yeah FOX, I’m talking to YOU, if you want money and have good content to offer, you need to also sell your stuff to TV stations in important places, like where I live for example. You and you ratings will be the better for it and I would have loved to see Firefly on TV.
Oh and while we’re talking about ratings - people (and I’m not pointing fingers here) are watching all kinds of stupid crap - CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP - that’s totally worthless and doesn’t get canceled. I mean why can’t “people” watch more good stuff like Firefly and thus contribute to its not getting canceled? Why did Sex and the City get SIX SEASONS and Firefly… is that fair? (And I’m not being a hater here … okay, maybe I am, but just to get one over on an Ex-GF)

Prior to cancellation, some fans, worried about low ratings, formed the Firefly Immediate Assistance campaign whose goal was to support the production of the show by sending in postcards to FOX.

This reminds me of a very old TV show that I read about in a book. It went by the name Wagon Train To The Stars, but some people just called it Star Trek. The funniest thing happened, the show was about to get canceled and fans sent in letters and postcards and all these other 1960s equivalents of e-mails but all to no avail. Show got canceled. Half a century later, this Star Trek thing has become the greatest franchise on the entire planet. I would say when people are willing to take action and actually send in postcards and stuff, some executives should listen up. Because certainly no one would write postcards if, say, American Gladiator were about to be canceled. And thus, nobody having learned from the Star Trek example, history repeats itself.

Done ranting now.

Any last words, GR?

Just that I feel the need to say thank you to the GWC crew for introducing me to this wonderful show (and, of course, for all the other awesome things they’ve been doing for so long now), and to Solai and Pike and dxf and Lucky and spatterson65 and Lady D and Mavourneen and Doc and all the other people who kindly pushed me a little bit in the right direction when I was somewhat reluctant at first and who were so nice as to talk Firefly with me even though I was way behind the re-watch schedule.

Still feeling empty, but I find consolation in the fact that I’ve already ordered the Those Left Behind paperback and that there is going to be new BSG content tomorrow to take away some of the emptiness.

So, er, where can I pick up my Browncoat?

Not an endorsement, but AbbyShot has them.

High on my list of “things I’d own if I had a lot of dough.”

We prefer a slow and languorous rewatch. No need to run afoul of any alliance patrols.

Let’s just be sure to be stocked up on spare parts.

PM me if you need a catalyzer… I swear we’re not armed…

Well, I went to the dentist today. And as the dental hygienist started to work on me, I noticed she was wearing blue gloves. Now as I reckon’ all you FireFly fans know, blue gloves is cause for fretting.
I don’t think she caught my very slight jolt of subconcious alarm when I saw the blue gloves. But she couldn’t help notice that I started chuckling to myself when I started being secretly amused with myself once I figured out why the blue gloves alarmed me.
“Sir, is everything okay?” she said. “Uh…yes, sorry about that,” I replied.

Dentist said my teeth are fine, …should floss more yada yada yada…but nothing amiss.

But strangely, when I left the dentist office I discovered I suddenly became I master of elegant ballet-like martial arts.

Ha! I was wondering if anyone would get, I should’ve known y’all would.

Don’t worry that happens to me too - sometimes the TSA people at the airport wear those blue gloves too - and I always find myself getting a little paranoid whenever I see them.

Oh, great Miss Muffet. Now I’m gonna start cracking up when I go through the TSA line----Come to think of it, I’m flying somewhere Monday as a matter of fact.
I’ll let you know if I cause a scene when I scream at the sight the TSA blue gloves!

Or, we can read the headline the day after.
