A Game of Thrones (HBO)

Winter is coming…

Do I even want to know? I’m only in book 1 right now, but I keep hearing people talk about the RW scene and how terrible it is.
Is it something I should be concerned about?

You don’t wanna know, brutha. You don’t even wanna know. Put it out of your mind. You won’t even know what it is until after the fact. There’ll be plenty of unspeakable injustices to distract you in the meantime. After all, winter is coming.

You won’t run into it for a while yet, so don’t sweat it.

Pike’s right…but it’s coming.

You most certainly do not want to know, nor should you be concerned with it. Just enjoy the story. When it happens, you’ll know it. And no, it’s not terrible at all. That’s subjective. Some might say it’s akin to a basket of the cutest kittens in the world. Heartwarming, really.

They’re crazy, though.

When you include a basket of kittens into the equation. How can you go wrong?

Now all I can think about is cute kittens.

New Set video from Iceland! Though I’m not the biggest fan what happens in Book 2 north of The Wall, this landscape should be so amazing that it’ll make this portion of the book so much more vivid!

I can’t believe we’re only a few days away from season 2. SO EXCITED! (though I’m a bit bummed it’s taking amazon forever to send me the season 1 BRs. I was hoping to rewatch it before s2 begins, but oh, well.)

eta: Oh wow. 4 years ago I found the gwc podcast and forum.I finally hit 1000 posts. slowpoke

Shameless self-promotion: I’m writing heavy metal reviews of each Game of Thrones epsiode for http://www.MetalSucks.net , one righteous, informative, and wiseassed metal site.

Nicely done.

So how did everyone feel about 2x1?

I was really surprised by how quickly they dived into the material. It’s going to be interesting to see how they work the different timelines of the events in the season as it goes on, given it starts off mostly everyone’s arcs
(while in the book it was segmented and things most certainly didn’t all start at the same time).
It’s a very premiere like premiere to the season though, which is expected but with every scene I feel like I want to spend more time in before it so swiftly moved onto the next character scene.

I guess we’ll see how the pacing fares as the season goes on. I still wish it’s a 12 episode season though. HBO, what gives.

 • EEK! I dunno what it is, but I get excited just seeing Dragonstone being featured in the intro map.
 • I sense that I’d once again become the resident Sansa defender in the forum, so anyway, I liked how they showed Sansa’s bit of backbone wrt Joffrey, and the ongoing relationship between the Hound and Sansa
 • Tyrion is awesome, as per usual. Pretty efficient sequence of scenes to establish Tyrion’s role for the season. You see he’s a natural at politics, while showing his kindness towards Sansa with just one line.
though if I didn’t read book 2, I’d be really worried seeing Dinklage’s name take over Sean Bean’s name place in the intro though.
Speaking of, wow, so many names in the intro credits. And we’re just in season 2. Can’t imagine how it’s going to be like in subsequent seasons, it’ll just be a wall of names.
 • Loved the scene between Littlefinger and Cercei.
 • Not sure what I think about the new characters just yet, since Melisandre was the only one who got a little bit of screentime (she’s good even if she doesn’t match my idea of Melisandre).
 • The direwolf CGI was a bit meh, tbh.
 • The episode ender was no Jaime pushing Bran out the window, but still pretty well done with the baby slayings.

Thank you!

They have the same budget whether they do 10 or 12 episodes. I’d rather they be able to tell the story with the cinematography they’re giving us than stretch it further & quality is hit

The more I watch the show, the more impressed I am with how much of the books they can retain and capture while still making the story palatable for the non-reader viewers (which I have to believe are a majority). I’m normally not a fan of any variance from the books (except for True Blood) but in the few cases the show varies (Cersei’s exchange with Littlefinger I think) manage to pack a lot of information and character development into a small space.

I found myself having a moment of empathy for Cersei in this episode- her spat with Joffery. I don’t like Cersei, never have, but she is a survivor and yet at the same time she’s a caged animal as women have no real power in this world. She is well-suited for power being a Lannister, but even her father doesn’t respect her. Neither does Tyrion, though he does respect that she has power to make his life miserable if need be.

I can’t wait to see what they do with this season. I love the direwolf scene- though I want to see Ghost more. CGI is all we can do now that they’re getting bigger. Dany isn’t my favorite character, but her strength always amazes me.

Yeah, a longer season would be nice!

All I can say is that your wishes will be heard. Very soon.

Yeah, sorry, I wasn’t clear on that. I meant additional money to go along with the 2 extra eps, not to have them stretch out the budget for 10 episodes in 12. If GoT gets more traction and popularity - and it seems like they’re already off to a really good start for season 2 - then they’d be HBO’s most viewed and most talked about drama, and thus maybe they could possibly allow for a higher budget for each season. They’re doing a fantastic job thus far adapting it and trimming down the fat from the book to the show, but after seeing 2 episodes now, there’s not one second of breathing room it seems like they could spare, and this is only book 2 we’re talking about. Just one or two more episodes could make all the difference.

Can’t they do a couple bottle episodes?!

I’m kidding.

But I wouldn’t mind if they did. Think about it: Tyrion is a room with the Hound for an hour? Hell…

We can pretty much count on this season being the last single contained book season. They admitted at Comic Con they are expecting top split Storn of Swords into 2 seasons. Given it’s mamoth size & density of material, 2 seasons may not be enough. We shall see. Based on Sunday’s ratings increase, a 3rd seson is all but guaranteed.
