5 Reasons Star Wars Sequels Would Be Worse Than The Prequels

Jumping in late, as always (taking advantage of a snow day to shirk some toddler-watching duties, passing them along to the extended family in the room) to say, simply, that KOTOR2 was a great game…until the ending, which sucked so hard that it KILLED the rest of the game, retroactively, for me. So much so, that I got rid of my copy before playing it again on Dark Side. It’s been YEARS now and I still chafe about it. UGH!

As far as SW sequels go, if it ain’t on film, it doesn’t exist as far as I’m concerned (I hear Lucas feels the same way). I do think we’re a little unfair on the prequels, Solai, though I could stand a little less Jar-Jar Binks in mine (as well as less Ewoks in my original trilogy. One wonders what David Lynch would’ve done with ROTJ and the damned Ewoks had he taken the directing gig. At least the Emperor would’ve been REALLY, REALLY frakking freaky).

It’s not so much that they were expelled from the EU, it’s that the author decided that she didn’t want to go through the trouble of retconning. Personally, one of the things I’ve liked to see in the EU since the prequels came out is watching how the authors retcon everything. Then again, I’ve been told I’m weird.

Maybe it’s because of the generation I am–raised more on the EU than anything else since I didn’t own the movies until the Special Editions came out, and looking forward to the prequels was my passion in high school and college–but I don’t have the cynicism that I see in a lot of fans. I know it’s the cool thing to hate on the EU and prequels, but I can’t do it. I don’t think Lucas can do no wrong, but it’s still his sandbox and everyone else plays in it at their own peril. That said, there’s some really stupid stuff that’s come out on all sides. Also, I’ve discovered that I can stand Jar Jar if I look at him as little more than a kid in Ep. 1. Like, maybe a fourteen or fifteen year old. And then I wonder where his family is and why they just let him get banished, and I feel bad for him and get sad. I’d like to hope that he got better as he aged, even if we never really saw it.

Erm. Wow, I never thought I’d defend Jar Jar, of all things. Carry on.

That certainly does paint him more sympathetically, even if it does nothing to alleviate how much a racial stereotype he is.

I was more offended by the Neimoidians’ semi-Asian portrayal, actually. At least Jar Jar got to be a hero.

Oh, speaking of which, there was a hilarious review of Ep. 2 that accused it of being racist against Hispanics because of Jango, Boba, and the clones. …never mind that Temuera Morrison and Daniel Logan are Maori. And that the two Hispanics in the movie (Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa and Veronica Segura as Corde) were heroes. The review has since been deleted :stuck_out_tongue:

Jar Jar was the accidental hero, more a buffoon, in Ep 1 and then he was a tool in Episode 3. I didn’t see him as a stereotype though. Yet, I could see some in the Neimoidians.

The Maori however were villains in the Lord of the Ring trilogy. Hollywood is racist against Maori!! Except for that Whale Rider girl who later became the Naboo princess in Ep 3…

/end sarcasm.

So was I. Although it felt more like disappointment than anything else. I got that feeling parents sometimes get when their kids do something they should have known not to do. You dont even get mad, you just sigh and shake your head, wondering where things went wrong.

The X-wing series by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston are fairly stand-alone as well and are regarded as some of the best books. They also establish quite a few characters that become fairly significant in later books.

X-wing stuff=Not too bad. I read it later, and found that the characters were fairly well introduced in the other books I had read so I understood their basic background. Corran Horn, for instance.

My three rats are named Face, Janson, and Hobbie. So yes, I’d recommend Allston and Stackpole as well.
