#227: Fifth Element, Futurama, FSL 2.0 Round 3

I emailed Chuck as well. I can’t wait to find out how flooded Chuck was with email requesting the Sean Scream. seanscream

The comment “There can be only Wan.”: When are we going to get a Highlander Arc? Or, if there should have been only one, at least an arc on the first movie and TV series?

Re: the GWC FSF: Black Ops conspiracy theorists, Leeloo’s my martial artist… do I get a bump from it? pretty please!?

I grew tired of trying to search for the best thread to post this in, so…

This is something that should make Chuck’s life significantly easier- the FCC regs on foul language just got struck down. We should see a frakin dramatic change in the podcasts soon.

“I’m tired of all this sex on the TV; I mean, I keep falling off.”

Chuck- thought you might appreciate a couple audio links. “It’s the 80’s (So Where’s Our Rocket Packs)” is a great song by Daniel Amos about how we were supposed to be much more technologically advanced then we are now.

A techno-opera I’ve long enjoyed is Phantom of the Copper Coil, you might want to check out.

And did anyone else notice a similarity between Leeloo as a beautiful woman seemingly incapable of defending herself but actually progressively we discover has great athletic fighting prowess, and River Tam? Or am I all wet on that?

Having watched as many of the World Cup games as my work schedule allowed (and well that was a lot of them!), the collective vuvuzela noise was hilarious. Just watch out, DP realy hates them :stuck_out_tongue:

Science kills trees – makes me sad :frowning: The fictional science/magic bit is definitely as Audra describes, in my experience. Though there are lots of things that go between them – McCaffrey’s stuff is like that (Pern, plus a number of her other series) and I’m sure there are others, though the examples I think of are books rather than movies.

listening some more… highlander! noooooooooooooooooooooo!
(I watched it with some friends a few weeks ago…)

actually land development kills trees, science actually likes trees…

Can’t thank you guys enough for this cast. The Fifth Element is my “feel good” movie. Whenever I have a craaapy day I just pop it in and the world is an ok place.

Mondoshawan Rock!

I love those silly space turtles.

Highlander def’nitely deserves a GWC rewatch. The first one, that is.

Tough to think what kind of arc to put it in, but… something with sword-wielding immortals and Spaniards with Celtic accents and Scots with Danish accents.

How about Highlander: There Should Have Been Only One, Don Quixote, and Asterix the Gaul

I just heard on NPR how the Vuvuzela, which plays in B Flat, is the exact note that you can play in front of alligators at the zoo, and they will think it’s an invading alligator, and bellow back their willingness to fight. It works immediately, and no other note will work. That has nothing really to do with anything else- but I think it’s pretty cool. Imagine bringing the alligators to a World Cup game. They’d probably die from fright at the thought of an veritable invading army of foreign alligators!

Dude… you messed this one up.

The Ercoupe was built with the rudder interconnect system to make it essentially unspinnable, a big cause of crashes back when it came out. The elevator travel was limited to make it stall-resistant, and there are hundreds of Ercoupes still flying today without rudder pedals.

We have a couple at my airport, and they’re well loved.

Regarding crosswind landings, Ercoupes are regularly landed with a 30-35knot crosswind, and have a demonstrated crosswind component of 25mph (21 knots). “What you say?! That’s higher than a 172!” That’s right, the Ercoupe is actually considered a better crosswind plane than the 172 or Cherokee because of the trailing link gear. Crab it all the way down, land in a crab, and the plane aligns itself to the runway automatically.

Google ‘Ercoupe crosswind landing’ and read up on it. There’s a lot of misinformation floating around in the FBOs by people who see “Hey, there’s no rudder pedals!” and make a bunch of assumptions.

A gift for my fellow GWCers. Here are some nice pics of playmate Haydn Porter in her Leeloo costume. No nudity, but still might be NSFW:

Enjoy.

Great ep, as usual! I laughed my ass off at the antics. “Poke Her Hot Ass” indeed.

I was intrigued by the mention of Robyn and “Fembot” in this episode (from time marker 10:30 to 12:30). So I looked up and purchased those albums (digital / explicit formats). I dig it! It keeps me focussed and motivated while at work, especially while grinding through trouble tickets or programing tasks. Anyway, in case anyone else was interested, here are the “Amazon MP3” album links

Robyn by Robyn

Body Talk Pt. 1 by Robyn

From there you can easily find the non-explicit versions of those albums, or the non-downloadable versions or the individual tracks mentioned on-air. Which were (in “Artist / Album / Track” format) …

Thanks for the introduction to a new musical artist!

Come to think of it, since all the rest of the movies were quite forgettable, you could do a decent arc looking at the first Highlander movie, and then some episodes from the Highlander series, maybe even including Raven. The series were very good, imo- quality television, with some similarities to Hercules/Xena in their interweaving of history into massive sword action. Which is what most appealed to me in all those series- some decent historical illumination.

Long time listener first time poster. I’m a big fan, I try to listen to all the casts but I end up getting behind and have to skip ahead.

I’m taking a break from mowing the lawn (and listening to cast 227) and I had to comment on Audra’s comment regarding sci-fi versus fantasy. I think I either read or saw an interview of Orson Scott Card (of Ender’s Game fame) and he said the difference between sci fi and fantasy was the cover art: nuts and bolts on the cover and it’s sci fi, trees and landscapes on the cover and it’s fantasy.

He said this in relation to releasing what he thought was a sci fi story to a magazine I think and having it turned down because the editor thought it was fantasy.

Love the cast!

I know it’s late, but I was waiting to listen to this back 'cast til I watched the movie again and I was avoiding the thread too

So…I had to chime in with…

That’s what she said.

::cheeky::

I had a thot on what Audra was saying about Fantasy v Sci Fi.
I’ve never really been into “fantasy” but I love Sci Fi. Like I played D&D but was always bored quickly with it, but if I was playing a Sci Fi based RPG, then you had my interest.
I had a evelation when I was listening to the convo about it. I think the reason I like sci fi over fantasy is that I am, and have always been, more comfortable in an urban environment over a more natural rural one. I’ve lived in both for long periods.
If I had to choose the more restrictive and highly urban enviro of say, Coruscant or the natural planet of Kashyyyk (the Wookie Homeworld), i’d choose to live on the “Jewel of the Core”. Even if it was in the “dregs” of the lower part of the city.
Just thought i’d share that.

EDIT: I actually think that a better comparison would be Mega City One (a dark, dank, dirty, dangerous police state (and other words that start with “d”) from Judge Dredd) and Pandora (pre-humans). I’d still pick Mega City One, methinks.
