#219: Heist Movies, Ocean’s 11, Firefly

After I finally watched Ocean’s Eleven (thanks for recommending it; good movie although I wasn’t surprise by the twist at the end) I could listen to the cast.

Exactly what I had in mind when the crew was talking about the last scene.
So sad that they had to shoot this scene right after Joss informed them of the cancellation. At that evening they went out for many drinks if I remember it correctly.

We just started Atlantis and have watched about 6 or 7 episodes in the first season. I like it! - especially Rodney McKay, and I’d like to see more character development of Tela (sp?).

Oh. My. That is so cool!!

Hey UD! I agree with you here, and agree that BSG is a pretty tough re-watch. It’s an awesome series (obviously GWC thinks so!) but thanks mainly to Chuck’s influence I’ve become hooked from the heart to SG-1. I turn to it for humor, comfort, and the characters I’ve grown to love. I’d have to gear myself up to watch BSG because of the dark material, but SG-1 is always a good choice for a show that makes you feel good. I think the value of that in a show can be underrated sometimes.

Ähhhhhm, that could be a problem.
They just don’t have any female writers, especially none on a caliber of a Jane Espenson. :frowning:

Teyla doesn’t get as much development as I wish she had, but she does get a few good episodes (starting with The Gift toward the end of Season 1).

I second Casilda’s recommendation of Nine Queens. And totally ignore the fact that there’s an American remake. I do.

I’m not sure if David Mamet’s films are more “heist” or “con” genre, but it’s always fun to see how the plot twists and turns in House of Games and The Spanish Prisoner.

I was rewatching some of the older Chuck episodes, and I got to the season 2 episode where Chuck is supposed to learn how to seduce an female assassin called Black Widow. I suddenly finds the actress who plays the Black Widow very familiar and couldn’t figure out why…

after Black Widow got Chuck into the hotel room, i realized… i find her familiar because i’ve rewatched Heart of Gold recently with the podcast… that was Nandi…

checked her on IMDB, she’s been in a lot of shows i watch =_= i guess i am not that good with faces…

that must have been a special episode… with Adam as a regular cast…

So, iTunes blocked me for over a month. They suddenly decided they wanted everyone to get a new account, without warning, and that meant that you had to give them your address from when you signed up with them, which for me was seven addresses ago, and I had no frackin idea what that address was. Which meant I couldn’t listen to podcasts for the last month, and am now catching up.

And I just wanted to say, in reference to this podcast, that, listening to it, I finally realized why I haven’t been enamoured with the recent Transformer movies. Because IT’S ABOUT THE ROBOTS!! The original series/es got that. The humans were bit players. They weren’t important. What we were watching was to find out about the robots. I truly enjoyed the relationships between Optimus Prime and Bumblebee and Prowl and Seaspray. I played with the toys. I never saw anyone buying the toy humans to play with.

In the movies though, there is no real force of character behind these giant robots. They are cool in special effects, but I don’t feel for them like I did in TAS. The movies focus on the humans. And that, for me, doesn’t do it.

Wait, what? I missed that.

It wasn’t for everyone. Until recently, you could use an AOL account rather than an official iTunes account. I had AIM for a long time, so 4 years ago when I started with iTunes, I just used my AOL account. Then suddenly without warning, about two months ago, iTunes blocked you from downloading podcasts unless you immediately switched to their official iTunes account. (I think they want to be just like Mircrosoft.) You could do this by giving them the credit card you used for purchases in the past, or you could give them your address at the time of when you began with iTunes. However, my credit cards were all recently stolen and then the cards canceled, and they refuse to ship replacement cards overseas, so I had no idea what the card number was. And since my culture constantly moves locations, it had been seven residences since I got my iTunes account, and I had to do a lot of research to try to figure out what it was. Then add to that that 800 numbers don’t work out of Morocco, so all of this had to be done by email- and it took a very long time.

I just don’t bother with iTunes anymore. It is an evil institution. Apple is worse than google and maybe surpassing Microsoft in evilness right now.

So far they have cornered off the “podcast center” model. In almost every podcast you hear the hosts asking listeners to rate them on itunes. Mainly because advertisers probably use it as a gauge to evaluate podcasts. Since they are cornering off that market and it’s not like itune is actually hosting these podcasts, they are just pointing to the links, they should at least open up their podcast subscribe/rating/comment system on the web, so everyone else could share. But they just wall it off. At least on Amazon people can rate and comment freely.

Of course you can always get an itune account and use itunes to rate. That would be the case if itunes publishes on all major OS. But itunes refuses to provide a version for linux. I think more than anything Apple is afraid of growing linux user base.

Yeah I’m not a huge Apple fan, either… spouse has an iPhone but he doesn’t update/upgrade it (for various, ahem, reasons), and I have a little 2nd gen iPod shuffle… and I get annoyed that like every other day it wants me to update, makes my desktop run super slowly when I have it open (really, just to download podcasts and sync with my iPod)… but hey, if people want to use their products, bully to them. I only get annoyed when people act as if they aren’t yet another corporation…

Does an open iTunes make the desktop run more slowly?

I’m way late to posting on this thread, but I thought I’d give some input anyway.
Finally! I am not alone in complete sci-fi geekdom. I just discovered this podcast and I am finding myself thinking more about the topics of discussion, becoming intrigued and finding new ascpects of science fiction and fantasy. As well as rediscovering the scope of the genre. Your show makes me laugh out loud. I know I’m leaving a response on one of the older podcasts but this is one of my favorite episodes.
Oceans 11 is a brilliant movie; I’d like to say that I do beleive Basher’s accent is cockney. And he is one of my favorite characters because he is not afraid to talk honestly to Danny and rusty and to express the incredulity that everyone else is feeling when Danny first explains the plan. As in, everyone’s thinking “you people are batshit crazy”. Basher is the one who constantly expresses that amazement and surprise: what the audience is feeling. But then again, Basher is a professional, so he can expand the audiences perspective as well. He actually knows what’s going on, so he can make the appropriate response. It draws everyone in a little bit more.I think it’s important to notice that Reuben is one of the most colorful characters as well. He does remind me of a producer, but one of those producers from the movie “The Producers”. One who goes along unwillingly with a plan he is actually moivated to see through to the end.
Two of my favorite lines:
You’re out of your goddamn minds!
I still owe you from that thing with the guy in the place.

Danny and Rusty’s chemistry on screen continues to amaze me.
This is one of the most elegantly portrayed heist movies I’ve evr seen. The only thing I can say is that Danny, as always, pulled it off with style. There’s more I could write, but you guys have said it all for me already. You really remind me of how to enjoy science fiction at it’s purest: quoting brilliant lines to freinds who understand them and share your interest and enjoyment in them. I’m excited that you mentioned the acting and casting– but I think one of the MAJOR parts of the movie– one of the things that make it such a delight to watch more than once– is the filming, the angles of the shots, and the music. The way the script is written, there is a lot of non-spoken communication between the cast and the audience. And the technical aspect of the film (the music, the filming) creates a final product that is a very elegantly told story about a heist. And one where the audience holds their breath when the characters do, as well.
I look forward to hearing more; and catching up on my firefly : )

I saw this over the weekend. IT BLEW MY MIND!

I love this movie. I am so getting 12 and 13. Thank you so much for turning me on to this series!
