#219: Heist Movies, Ocean’s 11, Firefly

Very well put, Topgun. I believe many here agree with that sentiment.

Jonathan_NYC, you’re entitled to your opinion. It’s making a blanket statement:

That is simply frowned upon. I don’t judge your moral compass, don’t judge mine. You didn’t like it, fine. You thot Sexy Beast was better, fine. There are ways to express your opinion without damning those who enjoyed Ocean’s. It’s a fun film. It’s a blatantly glamorized crime comedy. It doesn’t try to be anything else.

Personally I think you’re trying to rile folks up. Here’s a tip, around these parts it ain’t gonna happen. GWC ain’t about the hate.

As always a fantastic podcast, which makes a day at work on a Monday far more tolerable (and trying to stop myself from laughing out loud). I had never considered watching Oceans 11 before, but after the podcast I will give it a try.

Please, please watch Sneakers, it is the ultimate heist movie, with techie-cool (and is it me, or do I detect the odd Sneakers quote in the casts: “Hey, that’s not easy, what I just did!”?). It also stars the awesome River Phoenix in one of his last roles.

Oh, and Sean, while planning trips out becomes a challenge, raising a baby squeaker is awesome. I am the proud father to my two-year old Ada (I only recently revealled to my wife that Ada was also named after Ada Wong from Resident Evil, and not just Ada Lovelace). My wife came home from a work convention in Chicago to find Ada waving her/my lightsaber while chanting “JEDI!”. Apparently I have never looked as proud as I did then.

How could you possibly have been more proud?

OK, she could have had a phaser and a communicator, but that’s details man.

Welcome Peter!

With you on the geek pride!
My heart swelled at my daughter’s homework:

You are in good company here.

I love the message, it is definately one of my favorite episodes. So much great stuff packed in there. The best part (for me) is the amazing performance of Tracy, Mal and Zoe at the end when after treating everyone terribly, he still sincerelly asks Mal and Zoe to do one last favor for him. We see the man broken down to his essence which is child-like, asking Mal and Zoe as if they are his best friends, superior officers, and maybe a little parental vibe in there too. Anyway it was just amazing to see him ask that last favor and have it granted in the end. Says volumes about Mal and Zoe. Pass the kleenex…

About the 3D thing. I was already to jump on the Ebert hate-fest until I heard the arguments from the crew. Maybe we do have to just get through the “throw all the crap at the wall and see what sticks” phase to really sort out where this thing is going. Either way, there will be more Avatars, and more Clash of the Titans to argue about in the near and distant future.

Great cast, made a long drive much more shiny.

d

Wash: Oh my God! It’s grotesque! Oh, and there’s something in a jar.

Past OSSIM…uber OSSIM!!!

I love that she extra-underlined that last bit.

Peace and long life, little girl.

I love heist and con man films. Has anyone ever watched “Hustle” on BBC? Everyone who liked the Ocean’s movies should check out a little movie called “Confidence”. Enjoying the arc!

The sheer irony of the situation is not lost on me, but none the less I found the situation utterly infuriating. So much so that I dared not go straight home after work and pound out a post, but work off my anger at the gym first lest I post something that I would regret latter.

What was it that set me off? There I was at work, minding my own business whilst listening to GWC on my ILive system. When like some Monty Pythonesque Deity Chuck reached through the speaker poked me in the eye and called me a ‘racist redneck’. OK, maybe that is not exactly what happened… But it sure felt like it.

The aforementioned irony is that for weeks I have been tempted to start a thread about the situation here in Arizona, to try and inform my fellow Geeks about what is really going on here, rather than the spin that the press and others are dishing out. Day after day I have to listen to supposedly informed pundits and politicians lie about the new law, or well meaning but blissfully ignorant celebrities and athletes call for boycotts of my poor state. But ever time I was about to fight back with the truth I held off, thinking that GWC was not the proper forum for political or social dissertation. That it should remain a haven for Geekdom and that I should not taint it with political issues that might be divisive. And so what happens? Chuck goes and kicks that door wide open with his snarky comment about Arizona.

I am calmed down now thank God… Firing off a post filled with bad language and name-calling would only hurt any point that I would try and make, and quite possibly permanently alienate Chuck from me. A lose lose situation.

But maybe a post laced with sarcasm will make me feel better without making him feel quite so defensive, I can make my point without making an enemy, and maybe even educate a few people along the way.

Todays lesson
If you find a sleeping bear do not poke him with a sharp stick, he might bite.

(In my best Joe Piscopo voice ala Johnny Dangerously) “My cousin poked a bear once… (holds up an index finger) ONCE!”

PS: Thanks for the great workout coach Chuck!

What is 1070? Here, read it for yourselves- www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf

Uh Omra, got something shorter? Sure, here-
http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/summary/s.1070pshs.doc.htm

Now that that is out of the way, let us begin… Those who lean to the left would have you believe the issue at hand is that of ‘Human Rights’, that the new law encourages racial profiling and that those of ‘Brown Skin’ will be harassed. And I say (to quote the late George Carlin), “B@llsh*t!” The law expressly forbids ‘Racial Profiling’; no one may be stopped or questioned because of their race or ethnicity. Your citizenship status will never come into question unless you are already being held because of a civil/criminal/traffic violation.

It is unconstitutional is another charge being leveled at Arizona, and I say… “B@;;sh*t” once again. Already existing Federal law was used as a guideline for drafting the bill. http://szczecin-ultima.blogspot.com/2010/05/professor-of-law-explains-sb-1070.html http://www.irli.org/bulletin410.html They were careful to mirror the Federal law when crafting the new one, so as to protect themselves from the heat they knew they would receive from the Obama Administration should the bill pass. They knew it would be perceived as a ‘slap in the face’ by the apathetic federal government and might face challenges in court.

What about those on the right? Well the right would have you believe that the bill was written because of an overburdened infrastructure, a massive budget deficit which has hemorrhaged because of illegal’s on the dole. And because of National security concerns, and high unemployment. Well, those problems do exist. And they are legitimate issues, and a growing concern here. But it is just more smoke and mirrors… No one wants to talk about the real problem!

Crime. http://www.newsmax.com/US/immigration-arizona-crime-kidnappings/2010/04/27/id/357099 Kidnapping. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ed1_1216831510 That’s right, Arizona is now the kidnapping capitol of the United States! But wait, that is not all… We are also number two IN THE WORLD! http://www.drugaddictiontreatment.com/addiction-news/drug-crimes/phoenix-number-two-kidnapping-capital-as-drug-cartel-wars-intensify/ Our little state has actually surpassed Brazil in kidnappings. And a majority of our ‘home invasions’ are actually ‘hits’ on/by various drug gangs and distributors. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,372202,00.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw-0nfVC2Rk

This is the ugly little secret no one wants to address, for fear of appearing even more racist or bigoted than the nation already thinks we are. Not everyone than crosses the border has ‘good intentions’, a large number of them are criminals. The cartel wars that are going on are not limited to ‘south of the border’, it is spilling over here too.

Now about those ‘Human Rights’ the liberals love to espouse and whine about. What about the fact that there are over 12 million people over here living as ‘second class citizens’, hiding in the shadows. Being exploited not only by employers, but by their OWN PEOPLE! How is this OK on any level? Not only am I subjected to news on a monthly basis about Mexican nationals found dead in the desert trying to get here, but about the ones held hostage by ‘coyotes’ in ‘safe houses’ for ransom. They are packed like sardines into rickety vehicles and smuggled here only to be beaten, robbed, raped and held hostage by scum who have no respect for human life. This sickens me…

It is bad enough that there are employers who have no qualms about hiring these illegal aliens and working them for little pay, in unsafe conditions. Terrified to speak out for fear of deportation or abuse from the police (they have been told by the employers and coyotes the police here are as bad as those back home). For six months I sat on the Grand Jury for Maricopa County, it was very eye opening. I knew every city had a dark underbelly, I just didn’t realize how bad it really was until I served. We think that because we live in the ‘informational age’ and have the internet we know what is going on. “B@llsh*t!” We are sheltered, we don’t know squat. And before you scream ‘Freedom of Information!” You should be glad that you don’t know what is going on around you. I wish I could bleach even a half of what heard during those six months out of my mind. A lot of times we would joke and laugh about the really stupid criminals on the way to our cars before going home, and believe me there were some real funny ones; but sometimes… You see there are prosecutors that specialize in certain crimes, and we got to know them on sight. When one of the ‘sex crime’ prosecutors would come in, the room would go deathly quiet; those were rough. But the one prosecutor we really hated seeing was the one who specialized in sex crimes against children. Those were the days when we went to our cars in silence, our souls scarred by what we had heard. Doing our utter best to hold ourselves together until we could reach the sanctuary of our vehicles. Those were the days I thanked God for the dark tinting on my SUV, because I would cry the entire way home.

Anyways, the reason I brought this up is. 80% of the cases we reviewed were with Spanish last names, take from that what you will. I found it rather revealing… So whenever a pundit on one of these news opinion shows starts spouting off about how “The majority of undocumented workers coming into American are law abiding people” I kind of snicker. I worked in the Hospitality Industry for 20 years, so I have seen thousands of illegal workers in my time. And it is true, most of them were the kindest and most industrious people you could hope to meet. But, how can I put this gently…. http://www.stateline.org/live/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=136&languageId=1&contentId=51473 There are just so damned many of them. So even if only 10% of the estimated 12 million in the US are bad apples, …… That’s a whole lotta applesauce!!! http://ohmygov.com/blogs/general_news/archive/2008/04/10/number-of-illigral-immigrants-in-u-s-may-be-closer-to-20-million.aspx

For over 20 years we have asked the Federal Government for help, and they turned a deaf ear to us. So we passed this law. It is as simple as that. I could talk about the marches and rallies that the minority groups have held, or the inflammatory hate speech that spews from the ‘La Raza’ gatherings. E Verify, voter identification, day worker programs and so on… But why complicate things even further. I have just thrown a whole lot of information at you, I’ll let you digest that first.

I’ll get off of my soapbox now… Bye, and God Bless.

Telling people they lack a moral compass for liking Oceans 11 is not meant to be taken seriously. Jesus. What is wrong with you people. It’s like when I sent a note to Chuck saying that Sean’s father was part of the creepy underbelly of whips and he got all bent out of shape. How the hell that could have been taken seriously eludes me.

Okay, heist movies.

What is so, so, so awesome about Sexy Beast is as follows:

A terrifying London-based mob boss (Ian McShane, he of “Deadwood”) finds himself at an orgy. He winds up having wierd butt sex with a bank manager, and makes a bet with the bank manager that he can rip off some hyper-protected vault

What follows is an amazing heist movie

The protagonist, Ray Winstone (the voice of Beowulf in the animated film), is a retired English criminal living in the Spanish countryside with an ex-pornstar

And he is effectively forced by a frightening Ben Kingsley to commit one last heist

This is PREMIUM artsy fartsy awesome criminal movie people. Not mass market goofball fluff like, well, like Oceans 11.

Ummm, what?

Life’s too short for this.

Going to agree with you there, Pike. I watched the original a few years ago, and hell yeah, in my opinion it was very entertaining, and after taking into account the time it was made, just as good as our Clooney/Pitt-filled remake. Yes, some unfortunate 60’s douchebaggery, but I think it was made in the same spirit as the modern version: the cool kids getting together to have some fun, make an uber-cool movie, and collect a paycheck. And in the process letting the audience in on the joke.

Without wishing to ignite a flamewar, nor to feed anything, might I suggest that if you are continually finding that many people are misunderstanding what you are saying, especially if its supposed to be humour, you might want to look at how you are expressing yourself. Clearly the message you are intending to send is not getting through.

I have to say you seem to have this problem repeatedly, with many different folk. A while back you made a comment that Transformers suck, which is your opinion and fair enough, but you then followed up by saying all Transformers fans are retarded, which is not.

This is the problem you keep having, you take a perfectly valid opinion about something, but then extend it into an insult against anyone else who has a different opinion from you about that thing.

From what you are saying here, this is just your sense of humour, and is not meant to be taken litterally. But if so then I would say that this is perhaps best described as ‘edgy’ humour, and I would further suggest that the onus is then on you to be super-clear in what you are trying to say, to make sure that people don’t take offense.

This is of course a classic problem on the internet, and is why smileys and the like are such an important part of online written communication. I’m sure if you look about you can find some advice articles on how to express yourself without honking off the rest of the community.

Donald Westlake’s Dortmunder novels are swell heist lit. They’ve been adapted into movies, with varying degrees of success. The best is The Hot Rock, which starred Robert Redford (as protagonist Dortmunder), with James Caan and Zero Mostel (sp?) and a swell ensemble cast. They’re very 1970s, but they hold up well.

A lot of them are multi-heist pieces. Dortmunder plans a heist, and it works – but then something goes wrong, thus initiating the next, more elaborate heist.

Awesome pic, btw. The true irony here is that I was actually referring more to Arizona’s current push to ban ethnic studies.

(PS: You’re welcome for the workout boost. While I’ve been informed that I can no longer safely shoot off fat jokes, as a born and raised Texan I feel completely comfortable calling anyone in the world a redneck. :stuck_out_tongue: )

like i said, i want to re-watch Heart of Gold since the podcast, because I feel I didn’t give it a good chance. And it really is an awesome episode. Really rich, and surprisingly very funny. I guess I didn’t remember it being this funny because of Nandi’s death.

Here are my thoughts…

I realized the biggest problem I have with this episode might be with the house…

Yeah, that house wrapped in tin foil is the first thing we see, and I thought it looked horrible… but then this time around when Jayne trashed it for me, it was really funny. A fourth wall being broken moment. Makes me feel like even they probably felt it looked like crap, but that’s all they can do with the budget. So they made fun of it themselves.

Jayne: “Don’t know 'em folks, not going”
Mal: “They are whores”
Jayne: “i’m in”

hilarious, everything Jayne said in this episode is comedic gold. And by the time of the meeting, he’s all trained and brushing hair for the girl.

Isn’t it funny how the guest stars usually speaks better Mandarin than the main cast?.. The actress who played Nandi spoke her Mandarin lines perfectly, while Inara’s are completely intangible…

When Mal went to the theater, the Chinese Shadow Theater is about the exodus of Earth That Was. It looked very interesting, though the only line we get to hear is in Mandarin saying “The ships left with their holds completely full”.

I don’t remember if the crew talked about Zoe talking to Wash about having a baby. I love Zoe’s line “I ain’t so afraid of losing something, that I ain’t gonna have it.” That’s the kind of brave I don’t think I’ve got.

If Zoe convinced Wash, perhaps at the end of the movie, Zoe is already pregnant so Wash lives on through her?

Did anything happen to the snitch that informed the D-bag? I thought something happened to her, but didn’t catch it this time around.

What’s the point of having a hovercraft if it can’t out run a horse…

Mal and Inara scenes at the beginning of this episode, the way they banter and flirt with each other is really sweet… but totally overshadowed by the heart breaking ending.

This episode explains a lot about Mal and Inara. For Mal is how gentle, optimistic, and vulnerable he really is. But his pride and perhaps past experiences makes him put on a tough, rude exterior, when that is not him at all. For Inara, same can be said about the vulnerability and pride, but how did she draw the conclusion that she should leave from Nandi… I guess she is even more afraid of getting hurt than Mal.

A lot of people hinted that Nandi is younger than Inara. Nandi was only beginning at her companion training when Inara was already expected to be priestess. And hints about how Inara does not age… Part of the secrets we will never learn about Inara now…

Ah, sorry about the misunderstanding… Yes the ‘La Raza’ courses are under fire, the infamous YouTube video combined with some of the content of the study material which has been leaked out have many people down right terrified. If Caucasian teachers were to teach such supremest drivel it would be labeled ‘Racist Hate Speech’.

But enough of this crap… I hope the Star Trek auction goes well, the funds from the selling all that beat up crap will help to pay for the new Experience. Restoring the old props was going to be waaaay to expensive, cheaper to build all new ones. Besides the contractors which disassembled the exhibits and sets were total douchebags who had NO RESPECT at all for what they were handeling, and made a mess of it. Some of the insiders that stopped by for a look at some of the stuff going up for auction were shocked to see the condition of some of the props, it broke their hearts to see it looking that bad… The gossip coming out of Las Vegas is that the investor behind all of this still wants to build a new experience but that he is holding out for a better deal with CBS and that the economy has him worried about making a move too soon. (This is former employees from the Experience, they have their own podcast)
