I was trying to figure out what book to read next in the Ender’s series.
it seems that Speaker for the Dead is the next chronologicly but I don’t want to spoil my self by reading the wrong book next. ie. The return of the king before the twin towers, you know what I mean. Any suggestions?
You know, I was wondering about the same thing…just finished, and thought i’d go for the next… no help really, but I did run across this and thought I’d read the intros. It won’t let you read the whole book, because that would be too convenient…still pretty neat though.
It depends. If you want to read Ender’s life right after the book, Speaker for the Dead is your next buy.
If you want to know what happens to Earth (and most of the remaining characters), you might want to branch out to the Shadow series, “Ender’s Shadow”. It follows Bean’s story, and gives more insight into Peter Wiggin and what happens with Peter’s childhood dream of world domination.
Let us know which one you pick!
Yup. Ender’s Game is the first volume of the Ender Quartet, composed of Ender’s Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide (my fave) and Children of the Mind, in that order.
Exactly. The story picks back up on Earth after the events of Ender’s Game in the Ender’s Shadow series, composed of Ender’s Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, and Shadow of the Giant, again, in that order.
Enjoy!
Thanks! Folks! That makes perfect sense. I’m on Speaker for the Dead and am following Ender!
I just read the book for the first time. OSC mentions in the introduction that in this super definitive author’s edition he has corrected “errors and internal contradictions and stylistic excesses” from the original. I’m really curious about what exactly he changed. Can someone who’s read both versions comment on this?
I picked up Ender’s Game this afternoon, and will dive in tomorrow. I note that it was a Hugo AND Nebula award winner…which makes me wonder how I missed this one !! It is my intention to read 13 pages and then stop, until Chuck finishes Dune.
Ouch! Note: Ender’s Game is a much easier read than Dune, at least for me. Though Sean promises it’ll be easier if I watch the second miniseries. Still, with my current load at work, it might be a while.
I have, however, completed Ender’s Game, and plan on taking a few minutes to type out some thoughts this evening.
LOL! Awesome. I’m on a re-read of Speaker For the Dead (after finishing Ender’s Game) and cannot for the life of me remember what happens in Xenocide. I remember every word of Children Of The Mind, but can’t remember Xenocide! Is that the one with that strange girl who studies the wood grains in her bedroom?
I just started Ender’s game, and was struck by the wonderful introduction OSC has written at the book’s start (at 26 pages, reading the intro gets you almost twice a far into the book as Chuck’s entire read of Dune so far (!!) lol, just ribbing ya, Chuck)…especially this bit…
“The story of Ender’s Game is not this book, though it has that title emblazoned on it. The story is one that you and I will construct together in your memory. If the story means anything to you at all, then when you remember it afterward, think of it, not as something I created, but rather as something that we made together.”
I thought that was very cool !
I must say that so far Ender’s Game is one of the better SF books I have read. I’m just about finished with the book and I’m happy to announce that because of the great GWC experience I’ve started evangelizing for it and the “Chuck Book Club”. I’m getting my elder brother who got me into SF by way of Star Trek TNG and DS9 when I was younger involved by having him read Ender’s Game with me.
I just finished Ender’s Game, and liked it. Now on to the sequels !! Thanks for the recommendation, everyone who voted.
And I’m farther into Dune than you are into Ender’s Game…
Arrrrgh !!!
I’d be interested in hearing some stories about how you first heard of ‘Ender’s Game’. Being the shameless person I am, here’s mine:
I was at work one day and this guy who I talked to about Trek all the time is checking his email. His login is ender_ed. I’m like, “Who’s Ender?” He just shakes his head and says, “There should be laws. You haven’t heard of Ender’s Game” <<Deer in headlights>> He shakes his head again and says, “We’ll have to remedy that.” For that Christmas I received ‘Ender’s Game’. Absolutely awesome, was and still is.
My story is that there was this podcast, quite obscure but run by some very cool people with an awesome community, you probably haven’t heard of it but I think it was called “Galaxy waterwarmer,” or something similar, and on their forums they had this book of the month club and as everyone was talking excitedly about the book I thought I’d pick it up.
and to Joe, now I’ve started reading the book I can tell you that Xenocide is the one with the woodgrain watching girl.
I just re-read Enders Game and then Ender’s Shadow and Speaker for the Dead… I loved the first, very much liked he second, and managed to muscle through the third.

For those of you who have read the sequals, do you recommend them? I was chatting with a friend (after watching Razor actually) and she said they weren’t that great. Are they something I should get into now or are they something I shouldn’t be in a big hurry for?
I’m on page 76 of Dune… I’m five books into the Ender series (Enders Game, Speaker for the Dead, Ender’s Shadow, Shadow of the Hedgemen, and Shadow Puppets)… I started both at about the same time… guess which I like better?
