01/2008 Winner: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick

Lords of Kobol forbid!

Speaking of needing more chatter, though, do we have a way up yet to choose next month’s book?

Well since it is just a few of us who are apparently reading the book, I thought I would bring up the newly released blade runner set. Did anyone else find it strange that all who worked on blade runner hated the book? Seems a bad way to develop a script when you hate the founding material….

You’re sooooo right…with the holidays and all I know I’ve been slacking for a few weeks on listening, posting, etc. myself… I am making a point to go pick up the novel tonight, and have recently returned to bloviate on several of the threads…I did watch the director’s cut though, and loved it, it really deserves all the hype it gets.

Be back to comment on the book in a few days !

Just post in the book selection forum with the title and author, and why you think it should be read. Or second someone else’s suggestion if you agree.

Hey…something hit me on my way to work today.

Is the use of owls in Futurama an homage to this book? Owls are the first animal to fall to the disease that wipes out all animal life…given that Futurama is constantly nodding towards other Scifi works, perhaps this is such a nod?

Is PKD a replicant? <g>

I remember that. The story gets weirder.

That takes making an homage to a whole new level. <shudder>

Roy Baty is cooler in the movie. Discuss.

In the novel, Baty is a prick who had it coming to him. Discuss.

Rachel is hotter in the movie. Discuss.

The thing that happens toward the end to the new thing Deckard got – Deckard had it coming to him. Discuss.

The thing Deckard finds at the end. Is it symbolic? Or perhaps ironic? Discuss.

The other police station bit is kinda weird. Discuss.

The fusing-with-Mercer-thing is real. Or it isn’t. Discuss.

The DVD set is awesome. Discuss.

I thought the new cleaned up version looked pretty nice, but I don’t know if it was nostalgia or what, but I still like the smoke filled and grainy film version the original version of blade runner better.

And I still like the version without the voice-overs the best too.

The one with the voice-overs was the absolute original, wasn’t it? Is that even available on DVD? Because the last time I checked, all I could find was the director’s cut and the “final cut.”

Yes and Yes, to your questions. VHS prior to release of directors cut have it, and the new DVD versions carry it as one of the options.

I watched the voice-over version, and can see why Ford and Scott hated it, [sarcasm] because there is nothing like being into a powerful moment in the film—like Roy Batty’s final speech—only to hear a voice come on the screen to explain to you what you were too stupid to catch.[/sarcasm] Oh well. Aparently some people do like that version better though.

wow. thanks. I must have missed your post else I would have responded earlier. So, I’ll just stick to my copy of the version without the voice-overs then

Way to bring up an ancient thread, Starbuccaneer… and yet:

I am reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep right now and, first of all, Chuck’s totally right. I understand the movie a lot better even just being part-way through it. Also, while I didn’t 100% buy the choice of Harrison Ford to play Decker in the movie adaptation, he seems oddly perfect for the role now that I’m reading the book.

Secondly, this is AMAZING. One of the best sci-fi books I’ve ever read. How have I never read Philip K. Dick before??? The andys make so much more sense to me now! Anyone who loves Blade Runner should take the 3-6 hours to read this (less than 300 page) book full of awesome.

Replicant lawn maintenance…

All,

As Electric Sheep has been selected as a group read, the conversation will continue here
